Fire Damages Storage Unit in Wayzata

Firefighters initially had difficulty reaching the fire, which burned in a storage unit in an apartment's garage.

A fire broke out in a storage room at High Croft Manor, an apartment building in Wayzata. According to Dan Day, assistant chief of the Wayzata Fire Department, the fire started at 5 p.m. The storage room is located in the back of the apartment’s garage, and firefighters had difficulty reaching the room, he said. When they did reach the fire, it took only about half an hour to extinguish, Day explained. Apartment residents evacuated to the building lobby until the fire was contained. Day estimated that residents were in the lobby for about an hour. Although the garage was smoky, Day said, there was no damage to the garage or any part of the apartment building, except for the storage unit. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. …

Deephaven Man OK After Going Through the Ice

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is urging people to use caution on all bodies of water due to thin ice and open water.

A Deephaven man piloting an ice boat went into the water Saturday near Big Island after breaking through thin ice, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. He was one of three individuals who broke through the ice on Hennepin County lakes on the final day of 2011. The Excelsior Fire Department, Wayzata Fire Department, Long Lake Fire Department and the Minnesota State Patrol responded to the Lake Minnetonka incident. The ice boat operator was an adult male from Deephaven and was not injured after making it to shore one his own.   Also on Saturday, two men broke through the ice on Lake Riley in Eden Prairie. Lake Riley is located in Carver and Hennepin Counties. The men were not injured. Earlier this week, on Dec. 27, another ice …

Donation Scores Some New Gear for Wayzata F.D.

CenterPoint Energy presented a check to city for purchase of new fire department equipment.

The Wayzata Fire Department will soon be equipped with some new atmospheric gas monitors thanks to a donation made this week by CenterPoint Energy. Luke Litteken, a district manager with CenterPoint Energy, presented a check for $800 to Mayor Ken Willcox during Tuesday night’s city council meeting. “The CenterPointe Energy Community Partnership Program is really an opportunity for CenterPoint Energy to partner with local police and fire departments to support our shared commitment to safety,” Litteken said. Centerpointe Energy is currently in the process of replacing a major gas line in Wayzata, and construction crews have been excavating the north side of Wayzata Boulevard for the last few weeks. Mayor Willcox joked that the timing of …

Thursday Fire Damages Unoccupied Wayzata Home

Chief says cause of the fire still unclear.

A four-alarm fire damaged an unoccupied home on Gleanhaven Road in Wayzata Thursday morning.  Wayzata Fire Chief Kevin Klapprich said nobody was injured and classified structural losses as "minor." "The fire is contained," Klapprich said. "Damage was contained mostly to the garage area." One firefirgher reported symptoms of heat exhaustion and was, Klapprich said, being tended to at the scene by medics. It took about an hour for crews to contain the fire, and crews were stamping out smolders by 10:30 a.m. Klapprich said that while it's unclear exactly how the fire started, initial indications pointed toward a point of origin in or near the garage area. The home's owner died earlier this year, and the property has been unoccupied since. Jim…

Canoe Capsizes on Lake Minnetonka, Emergency Responders Stand Down

Friday's report of a vessel in distress turned out to be a wayward (unoccupied) canoe

An adrift canoe caused quite a commotion Friday afternoon on the normally quiet Robinson Bay in Deephaven. Multiple emergency units from several Lake Minnetonka communities responded to Robinson Bay Road around 1:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a vessel in distress. First responders stood down after quickly confirming the canoe was unoccupied. Mary Mithun owns the canoe responsible for Friday’s fuss. Mithun was at a meeting when she received a phone call telling her the fire department was at her house. “I came home and thought ‘uh oh, what happened?’” she said. “It turned out to be a big hullabaloo over a swamped canoe.” Mithun speculated lawn crews doing a spring cleanup along the beach put the boat back in a way that allowed it to “…
