Minnesota Third District Congressman Erik Paulsen received $2,250 during 2012 election season, according to report, and $5,250 since 2010.
The Sandy Hook school shooting may have added new fuel to the gun control debate, but advocacy groups have given hundreds of thousands of dollars to federal legislators since 2009, according to a report released Friday. Nonpartisan research organization MapLight, in coordination with Tableau Software, compiled contribution totals for the leading advocacy groups in the gun control debate—the National Rifle Association and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The NRA’s Political Action Committee dwarfs the Brady Campaign’s in terms of contributions to legislators. It gave about $1.5 million to legislators compared to the Brady Campaign’s $5,900. On Feb. 25, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the future site of the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office 911 Emergency Communications Facility in Plymouth. The new facility will ensure uninterrupted service for 911 calls, radio dispatch, and technical services. To begin digging with ceremonial shovels, Sheriff Rich Stanek was joined by Plymouth Mayor Kelli Slavik, Hennepin County Administrator David Hough, Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mike Carlson, and Hennepin County Commissioners Jan Callison and Linda Higgins Jeff Johnson. Today, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek joined Minneapolis residents and law enforcement leaders in a roundtable discussion with President Barack Obama to discuss guns and extreme violence. Among the reasons for President Obama’s visit was to highlight why Minneapolis and Hennepin County have sustained overall reductions in violent crime in recent years and to look for solutions to further reduce gun violence. President Barack Obama will visit Minneapolis on Monday to meet with law enforcement and community members to discuss gun control measures nationwide.
President Barack Obama will visit Minneapolis on Monday to meet with local officials about gun violence, less than two months after the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT that claimed the lives of 20 children and six school staffers. The day trip will be the president’s first one outside Washington to discuss his “common-sense” plan to combat gun violence, introduced on January 16 and reiterated a few days later in his weekly video address to the nation (see above). Mike Freeman suggested some fixes to state law that would keep guns from people he thinks shouldn’t have them.
Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman, Sen. Ron Latz (DFL-District 46) and Rep. John Lesch (DFL-District 66B) are pushing for five changes to state law that they say would keep guns from people who shouldn’t have them. At a press conference Thursday, Freeman spelled out the following recommendations included in the legislation that’s been introduced: Watch the three men speak about the proposal in the video above. Hearings on the proposal are scheduled for next week in the House and the end of February in the Senate.

Thursday's "Congress on Your Corner" event gave constituents a chance to speak with the Third District congressman about a wide range of issues.
Congressman Erik Paulsen hosted a “Congress on Your Corner” event at the Cub Foods in Chanhassan yesterday, where he spoke with about a dozen constituents from throughout the Third District about a broad range of federal issues. Kevin Crystal from Chanhassan came to speak with Paulsen about proposed gun control legislation, and to voice his opposition to any restriction of Second Amendments rights. “I told him I’m against gun control and encouraged him to vote against it, because it’s not effective,” Crystal said.
