To the editor, My most heartfelt thanks goes out to all my neighbors for entrusting me with representing you in the United States House of Representatives. Serving as your voice in Washington is a responsibility, honor and privilege I take very seriously. There are significant challenges facing our country—challenges that we must address together as a community, state and nation. I will continue to work on rebuilding our economy, creating jobs, tackling our budget challenges and addressing the concerns of Minnesota families and small businesses. I will continue my outreach and listen to you. I value the advice and feedback I have received from the 350 small businesses I've toured and 115 classrooms I've visited and remain energized and …

Despite support from the Minnesota GOP, Patch's panel thinks the amendment to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman will fall short.
Twin Cities Republicans aren't confident the so-called Marriage Amendment will make its way into the constitution after Tuesday's general election. In a flash poll issued Friday to Patch's panel of Republican politicians and activists, the majority believed the amendment, which requires a "yes" vote to be added to the constitution by voters, would fall short. About 57 percent of the 33 survey responders said the amendment would fall short. Our Republican panel also felt Barack Obama, running to remain president, had conducted a better campaign in Minnesota, a state he's favored to win in Tuesday night's election. "It's going to be exceedingly close, on the Presidential race and on both amendment questions," one pundit said. The …

To the Editor: I have lived on Medicine Lake since 1984, and been very involved for many years on behalf of the lake, serving on state and local organizations with the goal of lake improvement. I have had the opportunity to work with Sara as the incumbent Three Rivers Parks Commissioner for our area. She is a true environmentalist and cares about people. She makes herself available to work on creative solutions for people using the parks, not just with an interest in the lakes, but also the forest and other natural resources. She has done this while working to keep costs low. Sara’s opponent says nothing about the environment on her website. The only things she lists are costs and so called transparency. Who would run for an …

Former Wayzata School Board Chair looks at Terri Bonoff's claims with the helping the Wayzata School District.

To the Editor: Fact checking has been in the news quite a bit lately. I decided to do some of my own fact checking on the SD 44 Senate race. I served for two terms on the Wayzata School Board, so I do have a bit of an inside view to see through a big hole in one of Terri Bonoff’s claims. DFL senator Bonoff boasts that a bill she co-authored “allowed the Wayzata School District to expand without raising taxes.” That sounds really good. Too bad the statement doesn’t quite meet the fact-checking standard. This bill provides early eligibility to the Wayzata School District for Alternative Facilities financing (Statute 123B.59). Wayzata can now issue debt for certain maintenance projects and charge the taxpayer for those debt payments …

The Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a candidate forum from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Wayzata City Hall. Candidates for Wayzata City Council and Mayor candidates are all expected to attend, and the forum is open to the public. The moderator for tonight's forum is Jeffrey Lambert, an attorney and the prosecuting attorney for the City of Wayzata. Lambert has moderated similar events for the city for many years. The Wayzata Chamber of Commerce requires that the moderator not live in Wayzata. Tonight's forum will follow the rules of the League of Women Voters. Although Mayor Ken Willcox is running for re-election unopposed, he will make a brief statement. Three candidates are vying for two city council seats this November. They …

To the editor: I am writing to support the re-election of my neighbor Andrew Mullin to the Wayzata City Council. Andrew is one of those hard-to-find people that feel so strongly about the importance of the democratic process that he actually finds the time and will to participate in the process. Not only do he and his wife manage to balance successful business careers and the raising of two young children, but over the past four years he has devoted himself to the City Council and we are all the better for it. He has taken on many of the hard decisions facing our city. He makes it a point to solicit the opinions of all stakeholders and then craft a plan that may not please all—but leads the city in the right direction. What would a vote …

To the editor: I would like to voice my support for Mark Vanderlinde and Bob Christians for Minnetrista City Council. Mark has been instrumental in reinstating the citizen's right to be heard. He has a proven track record of keeping our tax rate low while providing the same or better level of services to our citizens. Mark has focused on improving our roads and involving our residents in a road committee to plan for the current maintenance and future infrastructure of the city's roads. Currently the road committee is conducting a study of aggregate and chemical treatments on Sunnyfield Road North and Kingswood Road. Bob Christians is a well-known financial supporter of this community. Many of you know him from the girls' softball teams he …

To the editor: My choices this year for Orono City Council are Kristi Anderson and Doug Franchot. I have known both of these individuals for a number of years and know they can do the job. Kristi Anderson is a lakeshore owner, has students in the Orono Schools and is the director of the Southshore Community Center. She is energetic, organized and will bring a refreshing can-do attitude to the thorny land use issues and budget balancing that every city council faces. Doug Franchot has been a voice of reason and judgment on the Orono City Council over the last four years. He is a partner in his own personnel recruitment business and has helped the City Council with his experience and insight into both personnel decisions and business …

To the editor: Jan’s got my vote! Hennepin County Commissioner Callison is a proven leader in our community—she sees our needs and responds with thoughtful insight and dedication to the future. One example is her leadership and support of community collaboration for a new Excelsior Library. This decade-long discussion was mired in endless debate. Commissioner Callison re-directed the process to balance the needs of the South Lake Minnetonka citizens, city standards and cost effectiveness. Leadership for the future is not an easy task, however Jan Callison consistently leads a public process towards a positive solution. As a result, we will have a new library that serves our community for decades to come. Jan has led the way on numerous…
