Mound-Westonka Softball's Chemistry Is Translating Into Wins

The White Hawks are using timely hitting, strong pitching and constant laugher to remain unbeaten in 2011

The Mound-Westonka softball team carried a light mood at Wednesday’s practice, but that’s nothing new for a White Hawks team built on team chemistry. During a quick infield drill to begin practice, quips and laughs were being thrown about just as frequently as softballs. “Where did you get that arm, from Jo-Ann Fabrics?” joked coach Dan Krause after a unusually weak throw, receiving a roar of laugher from the team. “Jo-Ann Fabrics? I don’t even know what that means,” an infielder fired back. Ask anyone on the Mound-Westonka squad, and she’ll tell you the same thing: The reason the White Hawks are off to a dominant 4-0 start is because the team feels comfortable working, laughing and playing with one another every day. “The nice part is …

Mound-Westonka Baseball Has Ambitions for Big Improvement

After a streaky 2010, the White Hawks look for consistency from their senior pitching this spring.

Last year’s record: 9-13 Wright County Conference record: 7-9 (6th) Section 5AA tournament: def. Minneapolis Henry 9-0, loses to Delano 10-0. The Mound-Westonka baseball team had its ups and downs a year ago, as the White Hawks rallied off a six-game winning streak midway through the season only to follow it up with nine losses in its last 11 games. This year, coach Jeff Peterson is looking for more consistency, and he’ll lean on senior pitching to do it. Three of his returners threw more than 30 innings a year ago. Key returners:  Senior pitchers Mitch Dunaway, Dan Hoy and Patrick Regan, junior shortstop Mitch Kern and junior utility player David Angel. Key losses:  Catcher Aaron Davis, second baseman Kyle Brown and pitcher Nick Noble. …

Experienced Pitching Key For Mound-Westonka Softball

The White Hawks have ambitions for a Wright County Conference title and a deep push into the Section 5AA tournament.

Last year’s record: 14-10 Wright County Conference record: 9-8 (4th) Section 5AA tournament: def. Fridley 10-0, lost to Delano 5-3. The Mound-Westonka softball team brings back seven starters from a team that finished 14-10 and fourth overall in the Wright County Conference a year ago. That gives coach Dan Krause optimism heading into 2011, specifically knowing he will have a pair of experienced pitchers in Katie Jo Delisle and Kim Hutchins. “On any given afternoon, one team can win any game,” Krause said. “Every game is within one run.” Key returners:  Junior pitcher/first baseman Katie Jo Delisle, senior pitcher Kim Hutchins, senior catcher/infielder Evan Bailey, sophomore shortstop/pitcher Brooklyn Pouti, sophomore infielder Allie Brady…
