Lynn McCarthy Named 2012 Wayzata Citizen of the Year

During the budget cuts in 2010, Lynn organized and led the Volunteer Steering Committee which was designed to mitigate the reductions in city services.

Lynn McCarthy, a community member passionate about making Wayzata a great place to live, was awarded the prestigious title of Wayzata Citizen of the Year during the Dec. 18 Wayzata City Council meeting. There to present a revised mission statement for Wayzata's Volunteer Program to the Council, Lynn was taken off guard when Mayor Willcox presented her with the award. “I feel like I’m between shock and awe,” said McCarthy. “It certainly is a shock. And I am in awe of the kindness in recognizing the work that has been done by all the volunteers.” During the budget cuts in 2010, Lynn organized and led the Volunteer Steering Committee which was designed to mitigate the reductions in city services. Three important initiatives were established: …

Retiring Wayzata Council Member Mary Bader Receives Send-Off

With her background in journalism, Mary Bader saw the need to improve communications between the city and its residents.

Members of the Wayzata City Council took time during their Dec. 18 meeting to bid farewell to retiring Council Member Mary Bader. A resident of Wayzata for 42 years, Bader retired at the end of 2012 after six years in the position. Early on, Bader served on the Wayzata Human Rights and Relations Commission, and was later active in a citizens’ initiative to preserve Wayzata’s historic Big Woods. With her background in journalism, Mary saw the need to improve communications between the city and its residents. She organized and led the Communications Task Force which strove to improve the city’s communications standards and raised them to a new level. That led to the establishment of the Communications Board, on which she also served. She …

Patch will highlight candidates from communities throughout Lake Minnetonka in the coming days. Look for your comprehensive election guide coming soon!

Andrew Mullin is running against Alex Plecash and Bridget Anderson for one of two Wayzata City Council seats. Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Share something most people don’t know about you. I have lived in Wayzata for 15 plus years and absolutely love the community. My wife Kristyn and our two kids (ages 11 and 9) are very active in Wayzata and the broader Lake Minnetonka area. I have held leadership positions both in business realm and the non-profit realm in addition to my four years of service on the Wayzata City Council.   I truly enjoy public service. I would welcome the opportunity to continue serving the citizens of Wayzata for another term. What sorts of thoughts come to mind when you think of Lake Minnetonka? The …

Election 2012: Bridget Anderson, Wayzata City Council

Patch will highlight candidates from communities throughout Lake Minnetonka in the coming days. Look for your comprehensive election guide coming soon!

Bridget Anderson is running against Alex Plechash and Andrew Mullin for one of two Wayzata City Council seats. Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Share something most people don’t know about you. I have lived in Wayzata for 14 years along with my husband and son who is almost eight. We have two dogs that we rescued and a hermit crab. I grew up in a couple of small towns in southwestern Minnesota, and my family moved to Eden Prairie when I was in junior high.   I have an active family and we enjoy biking, boating and skiing, as well as walking around Wayzata with our dogs. What people may not know about me is I have a fraternal twin sister and she lives out in Kentucky. What sorts of thoughts come to mind when you think of Lake …

Election 2012: Alex Plechash, Wayzata City Council

Patch will highlight candidates from communities throughout Lake Minnetonka in the coming days. Look for your comprehensive election guide coming soon!

Alex Plechash is running against Andrew Mullin and Bridget Anderson for one of two Wayzata City Council seats. Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Share something most people don’t know about you. In addition to being an Annapolis graduate and Marine Corps TOPGUN fighter pilot and former quarterback on a state championship Class 6A high school football team (larger than Wayzata) I also have an art background which most people don’t know.  I received a scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago between grade school and high school, and I was second chair viola in a symphony orchestra which toured Europe for a full month in the summer of 1969. So, it makes sense that I am on the board of the Perpich Center for Arts Education in …

Letter: Supporting Andrew Mullin for Re-Election to Wayzata City Council

Letters to the editor can be submitted via e-mail to Jay.Corn@patch.com.

To the editor: I am writing to support the re-election of my neighbor Andrew Mullin to the Wayzata City Council. Andrew is one of those hard-to-find people that feel so strongly about the importance of the democratic process that he actually finds the time and will to participate in the process. Not only do he and his wife manage to balance successful business careers and the raising of two young children, but over the past four years he has devoted himself to the City Council and we are all the better for it.   He has taken on many of the hard decisions facing our city. He makes it a point to solicit the opinions of all stakeholders and then craft a plan that may not please all—but leads the city in the right direction. What would a vote …

Letter: Supporting Alex Plechash for Wayzata City Council Seat

Letters to the editor can be submitted via e-mail to Jay.Corn@patch.com.

To the editor: Wayzata is a unique city with a fantastic track record of qualified people that have been willing to step up and serve; keeping it a vibrant and well run city. Like all Minnesota cities, Wayzata’s city council is tasked to find solutions to the many issues that are part of today’s city government; finances will be the most challenging for many years to come. Alex Plechash possesses a very unique skill set that will help guide Wayzata with all of the issues it will face.  I have had the pleasure of knowing and interacting with Alex as both a private sector businessman and in the community organization we both serve.  Alex is a fiscally responsible leader with a no nonsense approach when solving fiscal issues.  This is a …

Letter: Supporting Andrew Mullin for Wayzata City Council

Letters to the editor can be submitted via e-mail to Jay.Corn@patch.com

To the editor: These days there's nothing glamorous about politics—especially at the local level. The issues are increasingly complex, the opinions are polarized and the money is tight. Add in the fact that you're representing your neighbors and it's impossible to hide if you chose to stick your neck out. In Andrew's first term, he jumped in and tackled some of Wayzata's most difficult issues—the Bay Center redevelopment, the new Muni construction, city manger recruitment and city finances, to name a few. My view of his approach was to spend a great deal of time soliciting views from the citizens of Wayzata, seeking out experts in industry and government for advice and pursuing balanced solutions to move us forward. Andrew and his wife …
