Danny Zilverberg, a University of Minnesota wrestler from Wayzata High School, will be one of the Gophers on the mats when the NCAA wrestling tournament opens Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Zilverberg (16-12) enters the tournament unseeded at 157 pounds. His first opponent: Georgi Ivanov of Boise (22-5). (Click on PDF thumbnail to see the brackets.) Want to cheer Zilverberg on? According to GopherSports.com: Thursday’s opening session will begin at 11 a.m. Central. The event concludes with the championship finals on Saturday evening. The entire tournament will be aired live by the ESPN family of networks. It looks like ESPN3 is where the action will be Thursday morning.

by Lorrie Ham A trio of Mound Westonka High School musicians—Hanna Brustad, Kristina Hayhurst and Leah Pinault—will participate in the 19th Annual University of Minnesota High School Honor Band on the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus Jan. 25-27. "I have had quite a few students audition for this honor band over the years, but this is the first time in my seven years here that we've had even one student chosen to participate," Director Gretchen Chilson said. "So, to have three students earn their way in is wonderful." The weekend will culminate with the Honor Band concert on Jan. 27 at 1:30 p.m. in Ted Mann Concert Hall. In honor of National Public Gardens Day, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum will unveil a new rose that was developed by the University of Minnesota. In addition to Friday's rose unveiling, the Arboretum will also announce the local winner and the winning name of the rose-naming competition. Visitors will receive free admission all day, and families will be encouraged to participate in a variety of fun-filled Arboretum activities. Now in its fourth year, National Public Gardens Day celebrates the vital role public gardens play in promoting environmental stewardship and awareness, plant and water conservation, and education. The University of Minnesota, Morris Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Hodgson, began their 2012 East Coast tour on March 10. Emily Szeliga of Long Lake will be touring and performing with them. The tour culminates with a home concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 25, in Recital Hall in the Humanities Fine Arts building. The concert is free and open to the public. A free-will donation will be accepted. Some of the 2012 East Coast tour stops include: Wilmington, Delaware; Ocean City, Maryland; Auburn, Maine; New Brunswick, Canada; and Quebec City, Canada.

The Wayzata boys and girls cross country teams will compete at the 26th annual Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota’s Les Bolstad Golf Course this Saturday in St. Paul. The Griak, one of the state’s most recognizable cross country events, will host high school and collegiate teams throughout the day. Wayzata will compete in the high school gold division, with the boys' race beginning at 2 p.m. and the girls' race starting at 2:50 p.m. Both are 5k races. The boys gold race will feature 18 teams from Minnesota as well as squads from Iowa, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri and Kansas.
