The Mound Westonka White Hawks had seven wrestlers that competed in the 2013 Class AAA individual wrestling tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2 at the Xcel Center in St Paul. Sophomore Sam Bennyhoff took home runner-up honors, becoming the first state finalist since Jake Saatzer won a title in 2007. “Sam wrestled a great tournament including a thrilling overtime win in the semis to get to the finals,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. Bennyhoff started off with an opening round win over Colin LaBrosse of Park High School. The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling squad hosted the Section 6AAA Individual wrestling tournament on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23. The White Hawks entered wrestlers in 13 of 14 weights, placing all 13 and advancing seven to state. Seven state entrants is a modern-day record for the White Hawks, eclipsed only by the 1947 state championship that sent all ten wrestlers. “Overall we had a great tournament and are pleased to be sending seven guys,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. "As a coach you want to get everyone through, but the kids wrestled well and I am very proud of their performance." “Once again this year we have found some great students that just so happen to be great wrestlers as well,” said Dean Jennissen, MWCA All-State Academic Chairperson. The 2013 edition of the MWCA (Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association) All-State Academic Team definitely fits this description. This year’s team consists of 26 student-athletes with a combined GPA of 3.76. In fact 16 of the 26 had over a 3.90 GPA. Among them is Tyler Hebig of Mound Westonka High School. The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestlers competed in the Wright County Conference Championships on Friday, Feb. 1, at Delano High School. The conference tourney was an individual format, where the top two wrestlers in each weight class earned all-conference, while third place finishers received honorable mention. The White Hawks entered eight wrestlers in the tournament, placing six in the top three and earning a fifth place finish overall. “I thought we wrestled the best tournament of the year, with six guys wrestling at or above their seeds;” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. Mound Westonka's varsity wrestling team is off to a fast start with a runner-up finish at the Fridley Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 1. Tournament champion Tartan just edged out the White Hawks by a 189.5 to 183.5 score. “Overall we wrestled really well and just about won it," said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. Mound Westonka High School junior Tyler Hebig was recently named to The Guillotine Academic All-State Second Team. “The Guillotine” is Minnesota’s amateur wrestling newsmagazine and website, and honored 30 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third team members and 45 honorable mention wrestlers. Criteria for the award was a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA, at least 15 varsity matches wrestled last season with a 60 percent winning percentage and was limited to juniors and seniors. Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, state placement and cumulative GPA. Hebig is a three-time state entrant, has a 3.98 cumulative GPA and an impressive 115-25 overall career record. “Tyler is the epitome of a top student-athlete," …

By Lorrie Ham Juniors Tyler Hebig and Katey Nelson were recently selected to represent Mound Westonka High School in the state's Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership (ExCEL) program. The ExCEL program of the Minnesota State High School League is designed exclusively for the state’s high school juniors who are active in school activities, show leadership qualities and who are model citizens. Tyler Hebig is a three-year member of the football team, earning two letters and All-Conference Honorable Mention. He received the Gold Spotlight on Scholarship honor all three years. Tyler is also a three-year member of the wrestling team. He is a team captain, has been named MVP three years and earned three trips to the state tournament. …

Westonka's varsity wrestling squad recently picked up another Wright County Conference win and finished high at the tough Veldman Invite. On Thursday, Jan. 26, the White Hawks defeated Delano 49-24 to up their conference record to 4-2 and 15-4 overall. “Delano had a few holes, but we really wrestled well and it was a fun night,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. It was a special night for junior Tyler Hebig, who pinned his opponent and, in doing, so earned his 100th career victory. “Tyler is a hard worker and a great kid, and it was very satisfying to see him hit that milestone,” assistant coach Eric Rodelius said. Westonka's varsity wrestling squad improved it’s record to 14-4 with three dual meet wins last week. On Thursday, Jan. 19, the White Hawks traveled to Buffalo and defeated their section opponent by the score of 51-24. “It was nice to get a big win against Buffalo," said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. "Although they have some holes, they also have some quality kids and it should help us in the seeding process at sections.” On Friday, Jan. 20, the White Hawks hosted conference opponents Waconia, Dassel Cokato and Orono. In the first match of the evening, Westonka earned a conference victory over Waconia by the score of 41-31. Westonka’s wrestling squad went 5-1 in two quad meets on Dec. 20 and 21 and went into break with an impressive 9-3 record. “We’ve wrestled well and have been right in all of the dual meets this year,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. “It has been a good first part of the season, but we still have a lot of work to do to achieve our goals for the season.“ On Tuesday the White Hawks traveled to Richfield for a quad against host school Richfield-Edina and section foes Robbinsdale Armstrong and Wayzata.
