Wayzata-Based Blue Water Theatre Company Presents 'The Secret Garden'

Seating for the February performances at The Southern Theater in Minneapolis are onsale now, and seating for this performance are reserved.

Wayzata-based Blue Water Theatre Company will present "The Secret Garden" at The Southern Theater in Minneapolis on Feb. 7, 8 and 9 at 7 p.m. and on Feb. 10 at 2 p.m. Based on the classic children's book by Frances Hodgson Burnett, "The Secret Garden" features music by Lucy Simon and book and lyrics by Marsha Norman. The original Broadway production premiered in 1991, and ran for over 700 performances. It won three Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical, and was nominated for four others, including Best Musical. Blue Water’s production features a cast of 29 student actors representing: Orono High School, Wayzata High School, Wayzata West Middle School, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, Cretin Derham Hall, Field Middle School, Hopkins High …

Paris je t’aime: David McCullough on his Americans in Paris

Pulitzer prize winning author was in Wayzata this week to talk the role of Paris in 19th century America.

Author and historian David McCullough was in town this week as part of a current tour to promote his latest book, “The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris.” The lecture and book-signing event was hosted by The Bookcase and took place at Wayzata Community Church. Pillsburys and Steinhafels aside, Wikipedia-worthy celebrities don’t pass through Wayzata often, and Tuesday night’s pouring rain couldn’t keep a crowd of more than 850 from filling pews and folding chairs and standing in line for nearly an hour to receive McCullough’s signature in their front cover or, for some, get a picture with him. The newly released book archives the accomplishments of a number of 19th century Americans seeking professional and personal inspiration in Paris. …

Tonight: Pulitzer Prize Winning Author Visits Wayzata to Talk History

David McCullough will be at the Wayzata Community Church.

Best-selling author David McCullough will be in Wayzata this evening to talk about and sign copies of his new book “The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris.” Tickets are required, and those interested in attending can call The Bookcase at 952-473-8341 for information. McCullough has written more than a half dozen books, including historical explorations of Harry Truman and John Adams. He has won a pair of Pulitzer Prizes, two National Book Awards and two Francis Parkman Prizes from the American Society of Historians. “The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris” was released late last month and focuses on the wave of Americans who traveled to Paris in the 1800s in search of adventure and career enhancement. New Book Chronicles Contributions of Pillsbury Family

Tracing the family tree of influential Minnesota family.

In addition to making Minnesota the milling capital of the world, the Pillsbury family also made significant contributions in business, education, architecture and politics. On Thursday, June 9, over 60 people attended a presentation by Lori Sturdevant and George S. Pillsbury about their new book entitled The Pillsburys of Minnesota at Wayzata Community Church. “These folks didn’t know when to quit,” said Sturdevant, a 30-year veteran editorial writer and columnist for the Star Tribune. “They contributed to build strong communities.” Published in April 2011, the book provides an overview of the significant achievements and contributions of the Pillsbury family to the state of Minnesota. Video: Wayward Bird Causes Commotion in Downtown Wayzata

Customers of Caribou Coffee and The Bookcase got something extra with their Monday afternoon purchase.

A lost bird caused quite a commotion inside a pair of downtown Wayzata businesses Monday afternoon. The bird managed to enter Caribou Coffee just before 2:30 p.m., darting back and forth between Caribou and neighboring The Bookcase. After a few unsuccessful attempts, the  bird was caught with a fishing net and released unharmed.

Current New York Times Best-Selling Author Signs in Wayzata

Matt Logelin drew an overflow crowd to The Bookcase Monday night.

It was standing room only Monday night in Wayzata to hear author Matt Logelin speak and sign books. Propelled by a blog now read and followed by tens of thousands around the world, Logelin’s book “Two Kisses for Maddy” is now in its fourth week on the New York Times best seller list. Read in-depth coverage of the book and more here. Logelin has appeared on Oprah and has a movie deal in the works. His travel schedule has, especially of late, been virtually non-stop. His daughter Maddy goes with him frequently and herself has 70 round trip plane flights already. A lengthy trip to China or India or both is being planned.
