Lower ratings can add up to insurance savings for home and buildings owners in the cities of Excelsior, Greenwood, Deephaven, Tonka Bay and Shorewood. In the summer of 2012 the Excelsior Fire District was evaluated by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). In 2011 the Excelsior Fire District started the process to improve the ISO class 5 rating for hydrated areas and the ISO class 9 rating for non-hydrated areas. After the evaluation the hydrated areas improved to an ISO class rating of 4 and the non-hydrated improved to an ISO class rating of 5. The ISO evaluation is based on fire alarms and notification, water supply which includes documentation of homes and commercial buildings with fire sprinkler systems, and the fire department itself. …

First responders from multiple Lake Minnetonka communities responded to a report of a car through the ice Friday night. It turned out to be a false alarm. First reports of a car through the ice overtook radio traffic around 9:30 p.m. Posts on Twitter and Facebook followed shortly. Police clips posted radio traffic of the response—which included a helicopter, hovercraft, K-9 and dozens of officers and deputies. The response was in reaction to at least one witness seeing what they said were brake lights disappearing east of Excelsior Beach. In the end, all Friday night's adrenaline turned into was some potentially valuable practice under real-life conditions. Scott Gerber is leading a team of Minnesotans who are in Massachusetts assisting with the response to Hurricane Sandy. The team is currently preparing for re-deployment to New York and expect to arrive in Albany tomorrow.

As Hurricane Sandy approached the eastern seaboard, Massachusetts issued a preemptive call for help in assisting with the state's emergency management and response. Among those answering that call was the State of Minnesota, and a five-member team was mustered for rapid deployment to the commonwealth in advance of Sandy's landfall. Excelsior Fire District Chief Scott Gerber was tapped to lead Minnesota's detachment and coordinate with Massachusetts' emergency management teams before, during and after Sandy's arrival. The Excelsior Fire District received a grant in the amount of $4,786.95 to pay for Firefighter I, Firefighter II, HazMat operations training, fire officers skills in fire operations and supervisory skill training, Excelsior Fire Chief Scott Gerber announced recently. The grant was awarded to the local department by the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education (MBFTE), a board created by the state legislature and funded by insurance premiums paid by Minnesota homeowners. “These training dollars also provided our district live fire training for our firefighters in order to maintain and enhance our fire suppression, search and rescue and ventilation skills,” Chief Gerber stated. Training exercise allowed fire fighters to hone skills in a realistic scenario.
The Excelsior Fire District conducted a live burn exercise over the weekend. Members of the Chanhassen Fire Department were also invited. The house was provided by the City of Shorewood. "A big thanks to them," Excelsior Fire District Chief Scott Gerber said. "The training allowed us to improve fire suppression skills and communications skills in a controlled training environment."

Excelsior Fire District Chief Scott Gerber was awarded the Minnesota State Fire Chief Association’s Fire Officer of the Year Award during the association’s annual conference in St. Cloud last Friday. Chief Gerber was nominated for his instrumental role in developing the statewide mutual aid process and the revamping of the State Fire Chiefs “Fast Team” program, as well as for his work with the Life Safety Unit group to implement and improve firefighter rehab at fire scenes. Gerber was also the lead advocate in working with Hennepin Radio on the radio protocol for the fire departments and the training of the dispatchers to use the protocols.
