Orono Superintendent: Student Safety Drives Decision ‘Weather’ to Close

With inclement weather almost always come questions about the school district’s procedures regarding “snow days.” This column is intended to help you gain a better understanding of how we arrive at those decisions. The decision to shorten a school day, to close school entirely or to remain open is always based on safety. Saving money or past practice are not considerations, as some people may believe. (PHOTOS) A Potent Mix of Rain, Ice, and Snow Impacts Lake Minnetonka

Power outages and dangerous road conditions caused morning delays.

A slushy, icy, snowy mess greeted many Minnesotans Wednesday morning. The weather caused school closings, late starts, and headaches for drivers. Minnetonka Public Schools started two hours late. Orono and Wayzata Public Schools were closed for the day. After initially planning a two hour late start, Westonka Public Schools also closed, citing icy roads and power outages. Thousands of power outages affected several cities in the metro area, including Excelsior, Long Lake, Wayzata, Shorewood, Tonka Bay, and Orono. Road conditions varied across the state. Between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Wednesday, the State Patrol reported 73 crashes in the metro area, two jack-knifed semis, and 139 off road or spun out vehicles. (Update): Winter Weather School Closings and Late Starts

Snow and ice woes around Lake Minnetonka cause cancellations and late starts for Westonka, Orono, Wayzata, and Minnetonka public schools.

The overnight snow and ice dump came with morning cancellations and late starts for area schools. Orono Public Schools: All schools are closed today. High school sports and all community education programs are also canceled.  Wayzata Public Schools: All schools are closed today. Westonka Public Schools: Schools will start two hours late due to severe weather and road conditions, according to a Westonka schools announcement. Morning kindergarten is canceled. Adventure Club will start at 8:55 a.m.  Update 7:25 a.m.: Due to the icy roads and power outages Westonka Public Schools are now closed. After school activities and Adventure Club are also canceled.
