Westonka Sophomore Sam Bennyhoff Takes Second at State Wrestling Tournament

Last weekend's tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul saw several Westonka student athletes wrestle well.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks had seven wrestlers that competed in the 2013 Class AAA individual wrestling tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2 at the Xcel Center in St Paul.   Sophomore Sam Bennyhoff took home runner-up honors, becoming the first state finalist since Jake Saatzer won a title in 2007.   “Sam wrestled a great tournament including a thrilling overtime win in the semis to get to the finals,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.   Bennyhoff started off with an opening round win over Colin LaBrosse of Park High School. Sam Bennyhoff, Tyler Hebig and Bryan Tierney Win Conference Belts

Six wrestlers had top-three finishes for Mound Westonka High School at Wright County Conference Championships.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestlers competed in the Wright County Conference Championships on Friday, Feb. 1, at Delano High School. The conference tourney was an individual format, where the top two wrestlers in each weight class earned all-conference, while third place finishers received honorable mention.   The White Hawks entered eight wrestlers in the tournament, placing six in the top three and earning a fifth place finish overall.   “I thought we wrestled the best tournament of the year, with six guys wrestling at or above their seeds;” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.   Winning conference championships were Sam Bennyhoff, Tyler Hebig and Bryan Tierney; while Ben Rogers was a runner-up. Westonka Wrestlers Power Through Conference Foes

Sam Bennyhoff and Tyler Hebig remain undefeated this season.

Westonka's varsity wrestling squad improved it’s record to 14-4 with three dual meet wins last week.   On Thursday, Jan. 19, the White Hawks traveled to Buffalo and defeated their section opponent by the score of 51-24.   “It was nice to get a big win against Buffalo," said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. "Although they have some holes, they also have some quality kids and it should help us in the seeding process at sections.” On Friday, Jan. 20, the White Hawks hosted conference opponents Waconia, Dassel Cokato and Orono.   In the first match of the evening, Westonka earned a conference victory over Waconia by the score of 41-31. Westonka Wrestlers Find Their Mojo in Quad Meets

Several Westonka wrestlers remain undefeated as season enters holiday break.

Westonka’s wrestling squad went 5-1 in two quad meets on Dec. 20 and 21 and went into break with an impressive 9-3 record.   “We’ve wrestled well and have been right in all of the dual meets this year,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. “It has been a good first part of the season, but we still have a lot of work to do to achieve our goals for the season.“  On Tuesday the White Hawks traveled to Richfield for a quad against host school Richfield-Edina and section foes Robbinsdale Armstrong and Wayzata.   In the first two duals, the White Hawks blasted Armstrong 63-6 and outlasted Richfield-Edina 42-30, setting up a showdown with section rival Wayzata.   The Trojans have knocked the White Hawks off in section team competition the past …
