From football to faith, Noah Grothe isn't afraid to step out of his comfort zone
Noah Grothe offers this advice to his teenage peers: “Don't be afraid to take a step out of your comfort zone.” The Orono High School senior has had a lot of experience venturing out of his comfort zone. Grothe traveled to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic this summer on a church mission trip. It was his first time out of the country. “We spent two days at an orphanage doing general maintenance and a lot of painting, and taking the kids out on a day trip,” he said. Grothe and his group also visited a home for people with leprosy. “We talked with the patients, served them lunch and challenged them to some competitive games of dominoes, a local favorite,” he said. Orono faces winless Park Center in the first round of the playoffs while Mound Westonka hosts Fridley.
FOOTBALL PLAYOFF PREVIEW Orono (2-6, 1-6 in Wright County Conference play) vs. Park Center (0-8, 0-8 in Northwest Suburban Conference play). Playmakers: Grant Schoen, Orono (Quarterback): Has thrown for 100 yards in seven of his eight games under center this season. Schoen has thrown for 1,068 yards in all this year. Wednesday brings with it the biggest matchup of the year thus far in Minnesota football. The two top-ranked teams in class 5A clash for the Lake-Conference title and the opportunity to enter the section playoffs undefeated.
Gameday Eden Prairie (7-0, 3-0 in the Lake Conference) at Wayzata (7-0, 3-0 in the Lake Conference) Playmakers Antonio Ford, Wayzata (Running Back): Ford has supplied the Trojan’s running game with a lot of horse power throughout most of the season. He continues to shine in his role as a low, tough runner. Ford has carried the ball 102 times for 632 yards, averaging more than six yards every time he touches the football. Orono's girl's tennis team lost just its first match of the season yesterday, and the boy's cross country team has notched a top-three finish in each of its meets so far this year. The White Hawks kept pace with the visiting Spartans early, but could not find their offensive consistency.
Orono blanked Mound Westonka 20-0 in Friday's showdown of Lake Minnetonka high school football rivals. Mound Westonka was down by two touchdowns at halftime and kept the game within reach until giving up a late fourth quarter touchdown. Mound-Westonka is now 0-2 and Orono is 1-1 on the season. Orono improves to 1-1. Orono visits Glencoe-Silver Lake this week while Mound Westonka take to the road again to take on Delano. Patch will have previews of both games later this week.
