Orono Students Make Music

The fifth grade band performed for a full crowd at Orono Intermediate School

The sounds of clarinets, saxophones and tubas filled the gymnasium at Orono Intermediate School last night. The fifth grade band performed under the direction of teacher Andrea Arnold.

Pair of Orono School District Teachers Granted Tenure

Granting tenure is taken very seriously in Orono, said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Orcutt, and teachers must meet rigorous standards and expectations in order to receive it.

Orono Middle School English teacher Katie Stanley and Orono Intermediate School fourth-grade teacher Lanette Marchbanks have been granted tenure by Orono Schools. This noteworthy accomplishment was celebrated in a ceremony as part of the Nov. 19 School Board meeting.  Also recognized during the ceremony were Stanley’s mentor, Dr. Amanda Sass-Henke, and OMS Principal Dr. Patricia Wroten, as well as Marchbanks’ mentor, Kristen Thatcher, and OIS Principal Dr. Scott Alger. Stanley came to Orono from Lakeville Area Schools and worked in Apple Valley-Rosemount-Eagan Schools prior to that. Orono Students Display Artwork at State Capitol

The Capitol Art Show is a long-standing tradition of the Art Educators of Minnesota.

Two students from Orono Schumann Elementary and two students from Orono Intermediate School recently had artwork on display for Youth Art Month at the State Capitol in St. Paul. Artists representing Orono Schumann Elementary were first-grader Jaro Doise and second-grader Brynn Crandall; artists representing Orono Intermediate School were fourth-graders George Abbott and Svea Torgerson. The Capitol Art Show is a long-standing tradition of the Art Educators of Minnesota, in collaboration with the Council for Art Education and the National Art Educators Association, to recognize and promote the achievements of students throughout the state in the visual arts. Orono 11-Year-Olds Finish Second in Basketball Tourney

The Orono 11B team were runners up in the Robbinsdale Armstrong Classic.

The Orono 11B basketball team beat teams from Eden Prairie and Armstong to make it to the championship game over the weekend.  Forest Lake won the 11B championship.

Meet the Teacher: Brittany Peterson

Orono alumnus Brittany Peterson is teaching special education at Orono Intermediate School this year.

Brittany Peterson is an Orono alumnus who received a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from the University of Hawaii. She also received a Masters of Arts degree in special education from Walden University. “I was a therapist for kids with autism between my undergrad and my masters,” Peterson said. She also recently received an Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate from the University of St. Thomas. Peterson is teaching special education at Orono Intermediate School this year. During the last school year, she worked with 20 students with a variety of disabilities in kindergarten, second grade, third grade and sixth grade at Tanglen Elementary School in Hopkins. Meet the Teacher: Gretchen McQuillan

Gretchen McQuillan is teaching third grade at Orono Intermediate School this year.

Gretchen McQuillan is a native of Gibbon, Minnesota. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education, with a concentration in mathematics, from the College of St. Benedict in 2003. She received a Presidential Scholarship for four years. While at St. Benedict, she had the opportunity to study abroad in Greece and Rome. “We were supposed to fly home on September 11, 2001,” McQuillan said. “Clearly, we didn’t get off the ground that day.” McQuillan received a Master of Arts in Leadership in Teaching degree, and a reading license, from the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. While completing her Master's, McQuillan worked in a volunteer teaching program in Maryland for two years. McQuillan is teaching third grade at Orono …

Meet the Teacher: Annette Kilpela

Annette Kilpela is a newly-licensed teacher who recently relocated from Michigan.

In April 2011, Annette Kilpela received a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Northern Michigan University with a minor in integrated science/language arts. She recently moved to Minnesota from Michigan. “My mom actually grew up here,” said Kilpela. “She grew up in Wayzata, and my grandparents live in Cokato.” Kilpela is teaching third grade at Orono Intermediate School this year. Kilpela was a student teacher in second grade at Lakeview Elementary in Michigan from January through April 2011. She was also a long-term substitute for a month at the end of the school year. During that time, Kilpela developed and implemented lessons in math, science, language arts and social studies. She previously worked as a teaching …

Meet the Teacher: Robin Parker

New fourth grade teacher at Orono Intermediate School has over 25 years of teaching experience.

Robin Parker began her teaching career in the Peace Corps and is fluent in Spanish. She has over 25 years of teaching experience in both Montana and Minnesota. A licensed K-6 elementary education teacher, Parker is teaching fourth grade at the Orono Intermediate School this year. Her teaching experiences in Minnesota include teaching an ESL extended day kindergarten class, as well as first and second grade classes. Parker was also an instructional coach. She worked at the Bloomington, Shakopee and Anoka-Hennepin School Districts. In Montana, Parker taught Kindergarten, K-1 (multi-age), second grade, fourth grade, fifth grade and special education. She most recently worked as a literacy specialist for grades K-5 in North St. Paul. Parker’s …

Meet the Teacher: Bailey Chandler

New fourth grade teacher at Orono Intermediate School recently relocated from Missouri.

Bailey Chandler graduated from Missouri State University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. She was on the Dean’s List in the College of Education for four years. Chandler recently relocated from Missouri. She taught in a fourth grade classroom last year, and she is teaching fourth grade at the Orono Intermediate School this year. Chandler was the 2011 recipient of the Outstanding Beginner Teacher award from the Missouri Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. She believes every child can learn and has something to teach others. She feels her job as a teacher is to foster this interdependence and prepare students for their ever-changing futures. Chandler was a member and team captain of the Handball Team…
