The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestlers competed in the Wright County Conference Championships on Friday, Feb. 1, at Delano High School. The conference tourney was an individual format, where the top two wrestlers in each weight class earned all-conference, while third place finishers received honorable mention. The White Hawks entered eight wrestlers in the tournament, placing six in the top three and earning a fifth place finish overall. “I thought we wrestled the best tournament of the year, with six guys wrestling at or above their seeds;” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. The White Hawks will be back in action this Friday, Feb. 1, when they head to Delano for the Wright County Conference tourney. On Saturday, Feb. 2, they will travel to Rogers for the Rogers Royal Rumble dual meet tournament.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling team closed out the conference dual meet season with three close, but disappointing losses. On Thursday, Jan. 24, the White Hawks traveled to Glencoe-Silver Lake to take on the Panthers. After giving up a forfeit at 106, the White Hawks won five of the next six weights, and appeared to be in control. However, after Bryan Tierney received a forfeit at 182, they lost the last three weights and the dual by a score of 35-33. “We had some big wins early but were unable to hang on," said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling squad hosted conference and section rivals Waconia and Willmar on Thursday, Jan. 10, but came up empty in two close losses. In the opening dual, the White Hawks fell 40-33 to conference foe Waconia. “We battled well, but just didn’t have enough to get by them,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. The White Hawks suffered the same fate against defending section champion Willmar, this time by a 34-27 score. “Waconia and Willmar are both tough squads, and are close to being state-ranked by virtue of their 'Lean and Mean' rating," coach Munsterteiger said. The Mound Westonka wrestling squad placed fourth at the tough Hibbing Duals tourney on Jan. 4 and 5. The White Hawks faced host Hibbing in first-round action, and pulled out an exciting, come from behind 41-39 victory. “It was a fun win for the kids, and we needed our big guys to step up to get the win,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. The White Hawks reeled off four straight pins to seal the victory, capped off by senior Erik Hannigan’s fall at 195 pounds. The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling squad picked up its first conference victories of the season, defeating Orono 50-15 and Delano 33-19 on Thursday, Dec. 20. “Overall it was a good night for us, and we were able to sit some guys who have match count issues, as well as get some of the JV kids some varsity matches,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. Freshmen Kwin Retterath and Noah Byers are two who have taken advantage of their spot duty, going 2-0 and 4-0 respectively at the varsity level this season. “It’s great to have those guys waiting in the wings and being able to throw them in once in a while. The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling squad opened the dual meet season with five duals over two nights, going 2-3 and picking up two section wins. On Thursday, Dec. 13, the White Hawks traveled to New London-Spicer, taking on the host Wildcats as well as the Annandale-Maple Lake Lightning in conference action. The White Hawks struggled in the first match against New London-Spicer, losing by 55-15 margin. “New London-Spicer is awful tough, and they kind of took it to us,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. Mound Westonka's varsity wrestling team is off to a fast start with a runner-up finish at the Fridley Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 1. Tournament champion Tartan just edged out the White Hawks by a 189.5 to 183.5 score. “Overall we wrestled really well and just about won it," said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. Mound Westonka High School junior Tyler Hebig was recently named to The Guillotine Academic All-State Second Team. “The Guillotine” is Minnesota’s amateur wrestling newsmagazine and website, and honored 30 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third team members and 45 honorable mention wrestlers. Criteria for the award was a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA, at least 15 varsity matches wrestled last season with a 60 percent winning percentage and was limited to juniors and seniors. Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, state placement and cumulative GPA. Hebig is a three-time state entrant, has a 3.98 cumulative GPA and an impressive 115-25 overall career record. “Tyler is the epitome of a top student-athlete," …

Fifteen wrestlers from the Mound Westonka wrestling program recently competed in state tournaments in Albany and Rochester. First-grader Sam Dioszeghy and eighth-grader Drake Heath both wrestled in the Northland Youth Wrestling Association (NYWA) state tournament in Rochester on March 30 and 31. The NYWA is considered one of the most competitive state tournaments, and participants must place in the top two in district competition, and then the top three in region competition to qualify. Dioszeghy placed third in his weight class at state in the first/second grade division, going 5-1 on the day with four pins. Heath also took home third-place honors in the seventh/eighthp-grade division, going 4-1 with his only loss to the eventual state …
