This morning black smoke from a neighborhood just off County Road 110 and Hwy. 44 in Mound filled the sky as the Mound Fire Department participated in a controlled burn. A new home will be constructed on the site in December. Live practice burns give firefighters the opportunity to practice what they learn in class.

Firefighters risked their life earlier this year to save an infant trapped in a vehicle that broke through the ice.
The Mound Fire Department was honored with an Award of Merit last night for their emergency response on Jan. 18, 2013, when a vehicle broke through the ice on Lake Minnetonka. Because an infant was trapped in a car seat, two of the firefighters risked their lives by diving underwater and bringing the victim to the surface. Despite the heroic efforts, the infant did not survive. During that incident, firefighters rescued three other family members from the icy waters. Related posts: The award was during the Hennepin County Sheriff Office's annual promotions and awards ceremony at the Marriot in Brooklyn Park.

Firefighters battled both flames and sub-zero temperatures this morning in the northern Lake Minnetonka area. The first fire was reported around 6:30 a.m. on the 4000 block of North Arm Drive in Minnetrista. Mound firefighters, along with those from St. Bonifacius, were able to tamp down the flames quickly—although traffic near the intersection of North Arm Drive and County Road 19 was slowed during the first part of the rush hour. Damage was contained to one area of the residence, and no injuries were reported. Exactly what caused the fire was not immediately clear. A second fire was reported just before 11 a.m. on the 6000 block of Game Farm Road in Mound. Firefighters at the scene said they had been at the residence a few days earlier …
