Minnetonka Nips Hopkins in Extra-Inning Thriller

The victory clinched a share of the Lake County Conference title for the Skippers, which it will share with Edina and Eden Prairie.

"Give me a chance," Minnetonka High School junior Luke "Petey" Petterson said to nobody in particular as he took a cut in the on deck circle. "I just want one chance to win this." Twenty seconds later, with the bases loaded and the game tied at one in extra innings, Petterson was in an 0-2 hole and fighting to keep his at bat alive. After fouling off two curve balls, Pederson spanked a fastball sharply into left-center field—scoring Axel Twenge from third winning and giving the Skippers the win. Orono 453rd, Minnetonka 507th in Newsweek's Best High Schools in USA

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek has ranked Orono as 453rd and Minnetonka as the 507th best high schools in the country. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the United States, with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about Minnetonka's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students enrolled in AP, IB or Advance International Certificate …

Minnetonka High School Welcomes a Familiar Leader to Replace Principal Adney

It was a year ago when Assistant Principal Jeff Erickson left Minnetonka to become principal at Mounds View High School. He is returning now to replace Dave Adney at MHS.

From Minnetonka schools: It was a year ago when Assistant Principal Jeff Erickson left Minnetonka to become principal at Mounds View High School—a bitter-sweet decision, leaving a school culture he had been instrumental in creating during his 20-year career at MHS. The retirement of Principal Dave Adney opened the door for Minnetonka to bring Erickson home.  At their May 2 meeting, the Minnetonka School Board approved Erickson’s appointment as principal for Minnetonka High School beginning July 1, 2013. Minnetonka High School No. 6 in State: U.S. News & World Report Rankings

The school also was ranked 484th in the nation. This year's state and national rankings show improvement since 2012.

  Minnetonka High is the sixth best school in Minnesota, according to the annual ranking by U.S. News & World Report. It was ranked 484th in the U.S. Last year, the school was seventh in the state and 499th in the nation. More than 21,000 public high schools throughout the country were reviewed. Criteria include student-teacher ratio, a college readiness index (determined by percentage of students taking and passing Advanced Placement and/or International Baccalaureate exams), and students' proficiency on standardized tests. A total of 50 percent of Minnetonka High students took one or more Advanced Placement (AP) exams and 89 percent received a passing grade in the 2010-2011 school year, the data used to determine the 2013 rankings. …

'I Became the Principal Who Wants to Ban Yoga Pants': Dave Adney in Star Tribune

The Minnetonka High School principal talked to the newspaper about his time at the school.

Minnetonka High School Principal Dave Adney, who announced March 25, 2013 he will resign June 30, talked to the Star Tribune about his tenure at the school and being at the center of a yoga pants controversy last November: Dave Adney is still bemused over the media frenzy he inadvertently created last year when he urged parents to dissuade their daughters from wearing what he calls “high-definition pants.” ... “It morphed into this thing,” Adney said. “I suddenly became the Minnesota principal who wants to ban yoga pants. How These Local Dads and Daughters are Bonding Onstage and Backstage

Four dad/daughter duos from the Minnetonka and Excelsior area are among those participating in this weekend's Chanhassan performances of "The Music Man" by Chaska Family Valley Theatre.

Paul Twite and his 11-year-old daughter Rebecca joined the Chaska Valley Family Theatre this year to spend more time together. Ever since, the Minnetonka duo have been working behind the scenes to digitally capture all the components that go into the making of a production—as well as cast promotional shots. “My dad is great, and he even lets me take some of the pictures,” said Rebecca, who is also in the cast. “This has been a tremendous way for me to share my passion and to spend quality time with my daughter,” said Paul. Paul and Rebecca are one of four father/daughter partners participating in the Chaska Family Theatre’s current production of “The Music Man”—which includes a total of 19 families from throughout the surrounding area. …

Need Valentine's Day Plans? Eat Out at the MHS Heart Week Benefit Dinner

The Valentine's Day dinner, catered by Spasso, raises money for families in need.

Minnetonka High School Student Government invites you and your family to a dinner on Valentine's Day. As the high school celebrates Heart Week, students are raising money for families in need. The benefit dinner and silent auction will be hosted in the MHS cafeteria from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 14. Catered by Spasso, the menu includes chicken parmesan or spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, dinner roll, cookie and water or coffee. Tickets are $10 apiece or $40 for families of four or more. Purchase tickets from any Student Government member, in the MHS Student Union from 11-2 p.m. February 11-14 or purchase tickets online. Silent auction items will also be on display for your bidding. This event raises money for district families in need …

Five Minnetonka Students Sign Letters of Intent on National Signing Day

In total, 20 Minnetonka High School athletes have signed National Letters of Intent this school year to play 11 collegiate sports.

Today is National Signing Day, the day high school seniors from across the country sign binding letters of intent to attend a college and play their sport. At Minnetonka High School, five student athletes signed their letters on Wednesday morning.  Rowing: Catherine Ahrens (U of M) Football: Jack Bixler (MSU-Moorhead), Jake Bush (MSU-Mankato), DeCeon Schumann (Northern State), Malcom Moore (Iowa Western CC) In total, 20 Minnetonka High School athletes have signed National Letters of Intent this school year. Fifteen students signed during the early signing period last November and five signed Wednesday during the winter signing period.
