Find Out Who Won: Lake Minnetonka Voters Decide Local Races

A Wayzata City Council race may be decided by less than five votes; GOP candidates win or lead big in legislative races.

There was little need to burn the midnight oil during Election Day 2012. From President of the United States to the dozens of candidates seeking local and legislative offices, results came in early for many races involving Lake Minnetonka communities. By 10 p.m. U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar had already made her acceptance speech and was making the rounds on television and radio. Mark Gaylord knew he would be the next Mayor of Excelsior by 9:15 p.m. Gaylord defeated challenger Steve Finch by about 250 votes, 667-411. Nick Ruehl announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election. Mary Jo Fulkerson and Greg Miller won four-year seats on the Excelsior City Council, and John Beattie won the special election for a two-year term. …

Election 2012: Judy Rogosheske, Minnesota State Senate District 33

This week, Lake Minnetonka Patch will be featuring candidates seeking a variety of elected offices. Check back soon for your comprehensive voter guide, coming soon!

Judy Rogosheske (DFL) is running against David Osmek (R) for the Minnesota State Senate District 33 seat. Mr. Osmek did not respond to Patch's invitation to participate in this segment. Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Share something most people don’t know about you. Most people don't know of the variety of cases I handled in my law practice over 34 years, including representing a Saudi Arabian family business in which the the very nature of the Saudi Arabian legal system was on trial; commodity brokers hood-winked by a modern day cattle rustler, who landed in federal prison; or the pension fund fraud case that resulted in a $9 million judgement and the start of the business in Minnesota known today as Cambria.  What sorts of …

GOP State Senate Candidate Explains Why He Won't be at Upcoming Forum

David Osmek says his duties as an elected official will prevent him from attending Oct. 9 candidate forum in Orono. Judy Rogosheske says the absence is a calculated campaign move.

The Republican candidate for State Senate District 33 says the League of Women Voters' assertion that he has backed out of an upcoming candidate forum is simply incorrect. His opponent says the absence is a calculated campaign maneuver designed to limit her public exposure.  David Osmek is running against the DFL's Judy Rogosheske for the District 33 seat being vacated by retiring State Senator Gen Olson. Both Osmek and Rogosheske, as well as candidates for several other offices, were invited to participate in an Oct. 9 forum in Orono. The Wayzata and Plymouth chapter of the League of Women Voters issued a statement earlier this week stating that Osmek initially accepted their invitation to participate but has "now declined to attend." "…

It is no surprise that David Osmek opted to do the League of Women forum on August 14th for the primary election when most attendees are staunch party activists but then reneges on his agreement to meet with Judy Rogosheske for the general election. Regarding the latter forum, the candidate is required to hear constituents' concerns and then convey how he or she would address them if elected to …   more ›

David Osmek Defeats Connie Doepke in Close State Senate District 33 Primary

In one of the closest races from Tuesday's primary, David Osmek edges fellow Republican Connie Doepke in State Senate District 33 contest.

Editor's note: Patch incorrectly reported results of this race Tuesday night. Local editor Jay Corn apologizes for the error and regrets any confusion it may have caused. Mound City Councilman David Osmek has narrowly defeated fellow Republican Connie Doepke in Tuesday's State Senate District 33 primary, according to unofficial results posted by the Minnesota Secretary of State. "Connie just called me, with a heartfelt congratulation," Osmek wrote on Twitter just after midnight. "Its time to move forward together..and win in November." The race was among the state's closest and less than 2 percent of the vote seperated the two candidates as Tuesday turned to Wednesday. With all 39 precincts reporting, Osmek's margin of victory appears to …

Find Out Who Wants to Represent Lake Minnetonka in the State Legislature

Lake Minnetonka's State Senate and House seats will be up for grabs this November, but primaries will be needed to finalize ballot.

With the June 5 deadline to file for state and county offices having now come and gone, a picture of how November’s ballot will look is beginning to come into focus. The retirement of State Senator Gen Olson has sparked what promises to be a hotly contested battle for her District 33 seat. District 33 includes all of the communities ringing Lake Minnetonka, as well as Maple Plain, Independence, Plymouth, Loretto, St. Bonifacius and the northwest portion of Minnetonka. Judy Rogosheske will represent the DFL in the District 33 race, but a primary will be needed to determine the GOP’s candidate. While Republicans endorsed Mound City Councilman David Osmek at their May convention, Connie Doepke—who currently represents District 33B in the …
