Creativity of Mound Westonka H.S. Artists Earns Honors at Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards

The Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards are a statewide regional affiliation of the National Scholastic Art Awards program, recognizing many of the state’s most creative teenagers.

by Lorrie Ham Once again, Mound Westonka High School was well represented at the Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards. For the second year in a row, two MWHS artists earned individual Gold Key Awards for artistic excellence. Two students also earned Silver Keys, and two received Honorable Mention recognition.   The Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards are a statewide regional affiliation of the National Scholastic Art Awards program, recognizing many of the state’s most creative teenagers. The competition is open to all Minnesota students grades 7-12.   This year, 1,849 individual works of art and 164 portfolios were submitted by schools around the state, which was up 500 from 2012. The jury awarded 183 Gold Keys for individual entries this year. …

Westonka Art Students Take Home Hardware

Award winning works of student art move on to compete in national competition.

By Lorrie Ham Westonka students Jalyn Macy and Mckae Bailey have been honored with Gold Key Awards at the 2012 Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards (MSSA) Contest for their drawings, Zebra Shoe and Papaya. Senior James Woods and junior Jess Novack have been awarded Silver Keys for their drawings, Shaving and Dat Vic. Out of 1376 individual artwork entries submitted in the state of Minnesota, the jury awarded 133 Gold Keys and 167 Silver Keys for artwork entries. All four students’ artworks will be on exhibit with the other award winning artworks at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design from Jan. 30 through Feb. 26. Minnetonka Student Artists Win 21 Scholastic Art Awards

Twelve Minnetonka High School artists won a total of 21 Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards, and their winning artwork is on display through Feb. 26.

Minnetonka High School has announced that 12 art students received a total of 21 Minnesota Scholastic Art Awards this year, including six Gold Key, six Silver Key and nine Merit Awards.  The artwork is judged on originality, technical skill and emergence of a personal vision. The students’ art is part of the Minnesota Scholastic Art Exhibition which is open to the public daily through Feb. 26 at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design’s Gallery. Mound Whiz Kid Heads to Ivy League

In addition to having a perfect 4.0 grade point average, Julia Harrison is also a celebrated athlete and artist.

Julia Harrison, daughter of Susan and Ralph Harrison of Mound, was co-valedictorian of the 2011 Mound Westonka High School (MWHS) graduating class. She will attend Dartmouth College in New Hampshire this fall. “Dartmouth was the only placed I applied,” said Harrison. “I applied early decision because of cross country and the academics, and I just loved it when I visited.” Harrison was named a commended student by the National Merit Scholarship Program for earning PSAT scores among the top 5 percent in the nation. She was also recognized by the College Board for outstanding achievement on college-level Advanced Placement (AP) exams. She took many AP classes at MWHS, but unfortunately won’t get credit for them at Dartmouth. The college also …
