The Minnesota Arboretum's Auxiliary Spring Plant Sale takes place this Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19, at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Sale hours will be 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days. The Freshwater Society will host the 12th Annual Road Salt Symposium on Thursday, Feb. 7 at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. The symposium will begin at 8:30 a.m. This annual conference aims to increase the awareness of the harmful effects of chlorides in road salt and to offer solutions to help mitigate this pollution. The 2013 symposium will feature the latest information on chlorides in area waters and provide innovative approaches to help repair and sustain our resources. This year's event will also emphasize current research on the toxicity of road salt and also a just-released report on the effectiveness of deicers. Looking for some family fun during holiday break? Here are a few ideas from the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum to cure "cabin fever" and even "burn off" a few calories. Arboretum buildings will close early Christmas Eve day (at 3 p.m.) and buildings and grounds will be closed entirely on Christmas Day—Tuesday, Dec. 25—but open the rest of the week. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum will be the setting this Saturday, Dec. 8, of the 33rd annual "Messiah" Community Sing-along with the Minnetonka Chamber Orchestra. A popular baritone and former Twin Cities resident, Thom Dreeze will return as one of several guest soloists for this holiday event which takes place from 2-4 p.m. Saturday in the Oswald Visitor Center's MacMillan Auditorium. The sing-along is free with gate admission. Naturalist Jim Gilbert will share images and observations from his new book "Minnesota Outdoor Wonders" this weekend at the Minnesota Arboretum. The book was written primarily at the Arboretum and will be available for purchase at the Arboretum Gift Store. The critical role of soil in protecting clean water is the topic of the 2012 Clean Water Summit, which convenes next week. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum announced there are two winners in the Arboretum's popular "Name the Rose" contest. The new rose cultivar will be known as "Summer Waltz," and it is part of a new series of exclusive Arboretum plant introductions that will be called the "Suddenly Summer" series. "Summer Waltz" was nominated by Mary Ann Starnes of Bigfork, MN, and it is a perfect name for this rose that features lovely pink, frilly blossoms but is cold-hardy and disease-resistant. The rose was developed by Kathy Zuzek, a University of Minnesota Extension assistant professor. In honor of National Public Gardens Day, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum will unveil a new rose that was developed by the University of Minnesota. In addition to Friday's rose unveiling, the Arboretum will also announce the local winner and the winning name of the rose-naming competition.
