Westonka Sophomore Sam Bennyhoff Takes Second at State Wrestling Tournament

Last weekend's tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul saw several Westonka student athletes wrestle well.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks had seven wrestlers that competed in the 2013 Class AAA individual wrestling tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2 at the Xcel Center in St Paul.   Sophomore Sam Bennyhoff took home runner-up honors, becoming the first state finalist since Jake Saatzer won a title in 2007.   “Sam wrestled a great tournament including a thrilling overtime win in the semis to get to the finals,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.   Bennyhoff started off with an opening round win over Colin LaBrosse of Park High School. After falling behind early, Bennyhoff stormed back and then held on for a 7-5 win.   “It was important for Sam to get that first state tournament win and get him rolling,” commented assistant coach …

Sam Bennyhoff, Tyler Hebig and Bryan Tierney Win Conference Belts

Six wrestlers had top-three finishes for Mound Westonka High School at Wright County Conference Championships.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestlers competed in the Wright County Conference Championships on Friday, Feb. 1, at Delano High School. The conference tourney was an individual format, where the top two wrestlers in each weight class earned all-conference, while third place finishers received honorable mention.   The White Hawks entered eight wrestlers in the tournament, placing six in the top three and earning a fifth place finish overall.   “I thought we wrestled the best tournament of the year, with six guys wrestling at or above their seeds;” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.   Winning conference championships were Sam Bennyhoff, Tyler Hebig and Bryan Tierney; while Ben Rogers was a runner-up. Westonka Wrestlers Snake-Bit In Close Losses

The White Hawks will be back in action this Friday, Feb. 1, when they head to Delano for the Wright County Conference tourney. On Saturday, Feb. 2, they will travel to Rogers for the Rogers Royal Rumble dual meet tournament.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling team closed out the conference dual meet season with three close, but disappointing losses.    On Thursday, Jan. 24, the White Hawks traveled to Glencoe-Silver Lake to take on the Panthers. After giving up a forfeit at 106, the White Hawks won five of the next six weights, and appeared to be in control. However, after Bryan Tierney received a forfeit at 182, they lost the last three weights and the dual by a score of 35-33.   “We had some big wins early but were unable to hang on," said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. "We had some guys out that could have made the difference, but we still just didn’t get it done." Westonka Wrestlers Drop Pair of Close Duals

The White Hawks will continue their tough schedule when they travel to Hutchinson on Thursday, Jan. 17 to take on the state-ranked Tigers, as well as the nationally ranked St. Michael-Albertville Knights.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling squad hosted conference and section rivals Waconia and Willmar on Thursday, Jan. 10, but came up empty in two close losses.   In the opening dual, the White Hawks fell 40-33 to conference foe Waconia.   “We battled well, but just didn’t have enough to get by them,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.   The White Hawks suffered the same fate against defending section champion Willmar, this time by a 34-27 score.   “Waconia and Willmar are both tough squads, and are close to being state-ranked by virtue of their 'Lean and Mean' rating," coach Munsterteiger said. Westonka Wrestlers Notch Solid Finish at Hibbing Invitational

Westonka now prepares for a triangular on Thursday and a matchup against Minnetonka on Friday.

The Mound Westonka wrestling squad placed fourth at the tough Hibbing Duals tourney on Jan. 4 and 5.  The White Hawks faced host Hibbing in first-round action, and pulled out an exciting, come from behind 41-39 victory.   “It was a fun win for the kids, and we needed our big guys to step up to get the win,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.   The White Hawks reeled off four straight pins to seal the victory, capped off by senior Erik Hannigan’s fall at 195 pounds. The victory put the White Hawks in the winner’s pool, and they faced three formidable squads, a tough task with three open weights.   “We have some guys out and we’re not down to our tournament weights yet, so we really had to battle to have a chance to win,” commented …

White Hawks Wrestlers Earn First Conference Victories of the Season

The White Hawks have evened up their conference record at 2-2, and are 4-3 overall heading into the prestigious Hibbing Duals this weekend.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling squad picked up its first conference victories of the season, defeating Orono 50-15 and Delano 33-19 on Thursday, Dec. 20.   “Overall it was a good night for us, and we were able to sit some guys who have match count issues, as well as get some of the JV kids some varsity matches,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.   Freshmen Kwin Retterath and Noah Byers are two who have taken advantage of their spot duty, going 2-0 and 4-0 respectively at the varsity level this season.   “It’s great to have those guys waiting in the wings and being able to throw them in once in a while.  Every team needs depth, and these guys sure provide it,” commented assistant coach Eric Rodelius. Westonka Wrestlers Open Dual Meet Season

The White Hawks will take on Delano and Orono on Thursday.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling squad opened the dual meet season with five duals over two nights, going 2-3 and picking up two section wins.   On Thursday, Dec. 13, the White Hawks traveled to New London-Spicer, taking on the host Wildcats as well as the Annandale-Maple Lake Lightning in conference action. The White Hawks struggled in the first match against New London-Spicer, losing by 55-15 margin.   “New London-Spicer is awful tough, and they kind of took it to us,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. The White Hawks wrestlers closed the gap against Annandale-Maple Lake, but still fell by a 48-26 score.   "We wrestled better against Annandale-Maple Lake, but with open weights we were giving up too many points,” added …

Mound Westonka Wrestlers Take 10th at Bunyan Invite

The Bunyan Invite is one of the toughest tournaments in the state, and the White Hawks competed well against many state-ranked teams.

The Mound Westonka White Hawks wrestling team placed 10th at the Paul Bunyan Invite in Brainerd on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7 and 8.  “We have a lot of tough kids that need to be challenged, and this was just the tournament for that. Mound Westonka Wrestling Looks Strong in Season Opener

Tyler Hebig celebrated his 18th birthday with a third consecutive Fridley Invite title.

Mound Westonka's varsity wrestling team is off to a fast start with a runner-up finish at the Fridley Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 1. Tournament champion Tartan just edged out the White Hawks by a 189.5 to 183.5 score.   “Overall we wrestled really well and just about won it," said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. "We definitely have some things to work on, but I’m happy with how we started.”   Senior Tyler Hebig celebrated his 18th birthday with his third consecutive Fridley Invite title, and is a four-time finalist.   “Tyler was dominant and will miss this tournament when he graduates,” commented assistant coach Eric Rodelius.   Placing for the White Hawks were: Travis Peterson, 4th place; Drake Heath, 3rd place; Ryan Reid, John Byers, …

White Hawks Lose to Section Wrestling Champs

Section individual tournament scheduled for this weekend in Hopkins.

Westonka's varsity wrestling squad hosted the Section 6AAA Team Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 18. The White Hawks were seeded No. 4 going into the tourney, and faced fifth-seeded Minnetonka in the first round.   Although they defeated the Skippers soundly earlier in the season, head coach Todd Munsterteiger said Westonka knew they would face a tougher test this time around. In a scrappy battle, the White Hawks again prevailed, winning 44-25.   “Overall we wrestled well and got the job done, and winning is all that matters this time of year,” coach Munsterteiger said.   The White Hawks victory set up a showdown with No. 1 seed Willmar in the semi-finals, where the White Hawks fell 57-15.   “We had a few guys banged up and sick and were not …
