Captain Dan Wilson has lots of ice time with his 2012-13 mates.
The confident OHS boy’s hockey team is ready to start their season this weekend in Duluth. With strong returners such as sophomore, Gavin Payne, and seniors Dan Willson and Derek Limesand it is sure to be a successful season. “We have an old team with almost the same team as last year, so we have all been playing together for a long time,” said Dan Wilson, a senior and captain this year. Joining him as leaders of the team are junior Jake Flemmer and senior Derek Limesand. The three boys hope to win sections and go to state this year; a goal they have a good chance at achieving. Although they are only 4-2 in their scrimmages, the two teams that they lost to, Maple Grove and Andover, are not in their section. Their first games were last…

The White Hawks recorded their fourth overtime win of the season late last week, beating Missota Conference leader Chaska 5-4 in overtime. In a fast-paced and physical game, the White Hawks opened the scoring in the first period when Jess Nkhata scored a power play goal with a low shot from the point. Chaska was successful killing off three penalties early in the first period before the White Hawks finally capitalized for the 1-0 lead. Chaska scored midway through the second period to tie the game, but Westonka took back the lead just two minutes later when Nkhata was checked into the Chaska goalie. In the commotion, Jori Mazurek took a blistering snap shot from the point that found the lower left corner. On the next shift, the White …

Westonka High School remains unbeaten in conference play, notching victories against both Litchfield and Holy Family in recent action. The girls traveled to Holy Family on Jan. 5 and came away with a 5-1 victory. Holy Family had the first good scoring chance midway through the first period when Westonka gave up a breakaway. Senior goaltender Samantha Scobee turned away the breakaway with a great leg save. Westonka took a 1-0 lead when Grace Holmen took a shot from the blue line that the Holy Family goalie lost in her pads, and Jess Nkhata scored her 15th goal of the season when she found the loose puck and stuffed it home. Neither team scored in the second period, but Sam Scobee came up big once again when she stopped a 2nd breakaway—…

Westonka solidifies itself as a force to be reckoned with following a big overtime win against Hutchinson.
In a hard-fought game against conference foe Hutchinson, Westonka's varsity girl’s hockey team came out victorious in overtime last week. Westonka played most of the early game in their own zone, with Hutchinson peppering the net and senior goaltender Samantha Scobee turning away everything. The Whitehawks took a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when Michele “Lilly” Mahoney carried the puck just past the Hutchinson blue line and took a wrist shot that fooled the Hutch goalie high above the glove. Hutchinson knotted the score with four minutes left in the opening period when a slap shot from the point was redirected into the top right corner of the Westonka net. The Whitehawks responded to take a 2-1 lead less than a minute later …

Eight wins to start the season ended with 3-1 loss to Irondale this week; girls edged Hutchinson 3-2 Tuesday night (stats soon).
Westonka's varsity girls hockey team opened the season with eight straight victories and was ranked No. 4 in the most recent hockey poll. The Whitehawks beat a fast St. Paul United team Dec. 8, where the skills of Alev Baysoy, who was named a top ten forward for the U15 national team, were on full display but not enough to topple the red-hot Whitehawks. Westonka's senior team leaders combined to score a power play goal less than two minutes into the game when Emily Halvarson found the back of the net, with assists from Kia Johnson and Nina Chase. The Whitehawks found themselves in the penalty box for a large chunk of the first period after taking three back-to-back penalties but went up 2-0 early in the second period when Jess Nhkata dug …
