State calls drought situation "dire" going into the 2013 growing season; lack of precipitation has led to a sharp drop in lake and stream levels throughout Minnesota.
Drought conditions that have gone from moderate to severe in recent weeks have led to Lake Minnetonka's water level dropping to the lowest of 2012. The most recent measurements, recorded Oct. 17, indicate Lake Minnetonka's water level is 927.74 feet above sea level—down more than a foot since the beginning of August and more than 18 inches off the summer's peak. Lake Minnetonka is the headwaters of the Minnehaha Creek Watershed, which includes eight major creeks, 129 lakes, thousands of wetlands and stretches to the Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis. The watershed ultimately drains into the Mississippi River. This week the Minnehaha Falls have been reduced to a trickle, and creeks throughout the watershed have seen sharp drops in water levels…

In an effort to improve water quality in Langdon and Saunders Lake, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District has installed four curb-cut raingardens in the South Saunders neighborhood of Minnetrista. Raingardens are landscaping features that use native perennial plants to filter polluted rainwater that would otherwise end up in a storm drain, and travel untreated into a nearby lake or stream. They’re planted in a shallow depression that collects and holds rainwater after a storm. Curb-cut raingardens are especially effective, because they are designed to catch water running down the street before it reaches the storm drain. Raingardens absorb harmful material including oil, debris and algae-causing nutrients from the water and beautify …

The critical role of soil in protecting clean water is the topic of the 2012 Clean Water Summit, which convenes next week. Sponsored in part by the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD), the event will bring together water resource managers, planners, designers, engineers, soil scientists and the public to learn how building and preserving healthy "living" soil is crucial for reducing stormwater runoff and removing pollutants that enter Minnesota lake and river systems. The summit will take place Thursday, Sept. 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. "For decades, when we were building communities, underground pipes would funnel water straight into ponds or lakes, taking many pollutants with it," said …

In response to considerable public input, the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) Board of Managers amended the district’s preliminary 2013 budget to include an additional $250,000 for enhanced stop-gap measures to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) in 2013. The amendment was approved at the MCWD Board meeting on Thursday, Aug. 23, and is contingent on final board approval by December. The extra funds will allow the District’s AIS Task Force to continue working on a long-term AIS management plan and supports a stronger 2013 stop gap plan pending final approval later this year.
