Two Orono High School Seniors Sign Letters of Intent

In the last month, two seniors—Samantha Hartmann and Erin Briggs—signed letters of intent to participate in sports at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Virginia University, respectively.

Erin Briggs, daughter of Brigham and Cynthia Briggs, is a senior at Orono, who transferred to OHS in 2010 from Wayzata High School. Briggs signed on with the University of Virginia Nov. 15 to be on the women’s rowing team.   Briggs, who started rowing about a year ago, is ecstatic about going to a Division I school to row. Briggs, who took 16th of 39 teams at the Head of the Charles regatta this fall with partner Maya Gardiner, is one of the strongest one her team. “[Erin] showed great potential early on with her incredible work ethic,” said Todd Wilson, head coach at Long Lake Rowing Club.   It is a great honor to receive a Division I rowing scholarship, especially to the University of Virginia. “Virginia has the top women’s rowing …

Long Lake Rowing Club Launches 'Friendly' New Boat

The Long Lake Rowing Club will be hosting the Minneapolis Sprints Regatta on Saturday and Sunday, June 16 and 17.

The Long Lake Rowing Club had an official christening and boat naming party for their new coaches boat over the weekend. The boat has been named the "Casper" because it's white, it's wake is non-existant (ghostly) and most importantly, it's friendly—like the friendly people and the friendly waters of Long Lake.   The junior team and their parents, as well as a dozen new master rowers, several board members, along with honorary member (and former National Team member) Carolyn Leavenworth were all on hand to toast the maiden voyage of Casper, the friendly launch.   This boat offers superior safety to the members of the club, as well as being friendly to the shoreline with it's ability to speed along with the rowers without creating any wake…

Long Lake Rowing Club Hosts Indoor Ergatta

Lake Minnetonka rowing club will also welcome the U.S. National Team's coach to town this week.

The Long Lake Rowing Club hosted their inaugural Winter Wolf Howl Ergatta over the weekend. Juniors and master rowers from six clubs based throughout the Metro area participated, and the din from excited cheers rang out the door and down the street as athletes competed on indoor rowing machines, called ergo-meters. Rowers competed against each other and the clock and before a crowd of more than 60 onlookers, and many personal records (PRs) were achcieved. For Orono High School student Andy Deluca, it was his first competition. Deluca had a great time and says he is hungry for more. Teams from Rochester, Hudson, WI, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Long Lake, the U of M and St. Thomas University all competed in the Winter Wolf Howl Ergatta. This …

New Rowing Club Finds a Home on Long Lake

Members of the community are invited to a fundraiser scheduled for Nov.11 to support the Long Lake Rowing Club.

While most vessels around Lake Minnetonka were being pulled from the water and readied for winterization, Todd Wilson was launching a pair of boats last week. Wilson is the founder of the new Long Lake Rowing Club and is on a mission to make Long Lake the state’s new rowing hot bed—a quest not being cooled off by the arrival of fall’s brisk temperatures. Pam Kearney and her daughter, Lucy, joined Wilson on Long Lake last Friday for a morning on the water. For mom and daughter, the club has provided a chance to get some exercise and, more importantly, spend quality time together outside “It’s really cool because this is one of the only things that she and I have started together,” said Lucy, a freshman at Orono High School. “Everything else…
