Following the buckthorn pull, the players helped fill large flower pots for planting by the residents of Boardwalk Apartments in Wayzata.
As part of the “Trojans Give Back” campaign, 28 football players from Wayzata High School pulled, chopped and tackled buckthorn, an invasive species in Minnesota, on Saturday, May 11. “The buckthorn at the McIver location had very large root bundles,” said John Berryhill, a Wayzata resident who assisted the team. “It took much grunting, chopping and rhythmic clapping to get them out. But they did it. We were all very impressed with the work ethic and enthusiasm that the players showed.” Following the buckthorn pull, the players helped fill large flower pots for planting by the residents of Boardwalk Apartments in Wayzata. Claudia Kelly of Long Lake has been named a recipient of the 2013 American Red Cross Heroes Awards. The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) is preparing for the open water season and preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) in the area's lakes and streams. A key component of the MCWD's 2013 AIS prevention and management program is early detection of any potential new infestations, and the watershed district is expanding its monitoring of non-zebra mussel infested waters—and creating a volunteer monitoring program to help spot new infestations. After two failed attempts and many financial struggles, a team from Lugazi, Uganda, made it to the Little League World Series this past summer. We feel that everybody should have an opportunity to play baseball. The youth baseball players in Uganda are in need of equipment and money. We are asking you to drop off any baseball equipment that you are no longer using. The equipment should be in fairly good shape. Wayzata resident Ron Anderson has been awarded the prestigious Volunteer Service Award by the Minnesota Community Forestry Awards for his work on the Bushaway Taskforce tree preservation project. Anderson, along with Wayzata Councilmember Jack Amdal and taskforce members Merrily Borg Babcock and Kristen Eide-Tollefson, were recognized at the Minnesota Shade Tree Course on March 13. The Bushaway Taskforce was a city initiated taskforce of community members that worked to minimize the impacts of the proposed new Hennepin County roadway redesign for Bushaway Road on the adjacent properties and the roadway corridor. The taskforce spent over two years working with Hennepin County to modify the proposed design. One of the items the taskforce …

by Lorrie Ham Shirley Hills Primary School students celebrated “I Love to Read Month” in February with their Second Annual Read-a-Thon. The successful event raised nearly $11,000. Students spent a total of 120 minutes reading Feb. 22, with the exception of half-day kindergartners, who read for 60 minutes. Students were asked to collect pledges for their efforts. “In the past we have always done product sales, but we were ready to try something new,” explained Shirley Hills Primary School Principal Ann Swanson. “While cookie dough, soup and other product sales have been successful at the school, only 40 to 50 percent of the sales actually went to Shirley Hills.” All funds raised at the Read-a-Thon will go directly to the Shirley Hills PTA …

Krysta Litherland, 25 of Plymouth, has been accepted into the U.S. Peace Corps and departed for Ghana Feb. 4 to begin training as a health extension volunteer. Litherland will make a difference by living and working in a community to improve health, water and sanitation. “I wanted to volunteer with the Peace Corps because I love to help others and wanted to expand my mind,” Litherland said. Litherland is the daughter of Mark and Rikka Litherland and a 2005 graduate of Wayzata High School. In March of 2010, an article in the city’s monthly newsletter, "The Portal," caught Deeby Kadrie’s eye. The City of Wayzata’s Public Works Department was looking for volunteers to help out a couple times a week over the noon hour. “One of my first jobs was with the City of Minnetonka,” said Kadrie. “I thought it would be an interesting volunteer opportunity, and it matched my background.” Since 2010, Kadrie has logged more than 500 hours in the Public Works Department, answering phones, taking messages and staffing the office over the noon hour. She comes in twice a week, and sometimes more, if she’s needed. “I love it here,” said Kadrie. “It’s like everyone is a big family. The guys are great. I bring them brownies sometimes.” The …

From the Orono Police Department: The Orono Police Department Reserve Officer Program is a volunteer opportunity for community members interested in assisting the Police Department. New Reserve Officers attend 10 evening training sessions sponsored by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office that provides a very good foundation of skills needed for reserve officers. Once reserves are done with their training they are integrated into the Orono Police Department and continue to build on those skills.
