Patch Pick: Orono Foundation for Education's 2013 'A Night In Nantucket' Gala

More than $200,000 has been raised at annual fundraiser to to maintain and improve the quality of education offered by Orono Public Schools.

Guests will be dressed to the nines this Saturday, April 13, for the Orono Alliance for Education's "A Night in Nantucket" banquet and fundraiser. The 2013 gala will take place at the BMW of Minnetonka in Wayzata, and tickets are on sale now. Visit the banquet's Facebook page for more. In 2000, the Orono Alliance for Education was founded to maintain and improve the quality of education offered by Orono Public Schools in a time of decreased funding from the state. Because of its small size, the district is not eligible for many state and federal grants available to larger school districts. Pair of Westonka Speech Teams Advance to '13 State Tourney

Zack McDowell placed 1st in Extemporaneous Reading, making him the Wright County Conference Champion in that category.

By Lorrie Ham The Mound Westonka High School speech team traveled to Wayzata High School on March 14 to compete in the Section 6AA Tournament. Seniors Naomi Jackson and Zack McDowell and junior Claire Erickson advanced to Final Round Competition. Jackson placed 8th in Humorous; McDowell placed 3rd in Extemporaneous Reading and Erickson placed 3rd in Poetry. Both McDowell and Erickson will advance to the MSHSL Speech Tournament in Blaine on April 19. The MWHS Speech team competed in seven tournaments during the 2013 season. Standing out this season are seniors Jackson and McDowell. Jackson placed 2nd in Humorous at the Maple Lake tournament in February. Hurry! Only 18 Spots for Trojan Tots Fall 2013 Program

The first 18 registered will be accepted and then registration will close. Parents will receive a confirmation letter once your payment and registration forms have been received.

Wayzata Public Schools is looking for potty-trained 3, 4, or 5-year-olds to participate in the Trojan Tots program taught by child development and parenting II students at Wayzata High School. Dates and times are September 16 through October 31 from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be no school on Thursday, October 17. Wayzata School Board Business: Teacher Recognition, Open Enrollment and Finances

During its March 11 regular meeting, the school board of Wayzata Public Schools conducted the following business.

From the Wayzata School District: The board received student curriculum presentations fifth grade students at Oakwood Elementary School and fourth and fifth grade students at Greenwood Elementary School. The board recognized East Middle School teachers Rachel Marcouiller and Nicole Johnson as the March 2013 Wayzata Public Schools Employees of the Month. The board recognized WHS teacher Mike Doyle for being named a Minnesota Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Teacher of the Year. The board recognized WHS teacher Sheila Peterson for being named a 2012-13 Debate Coach of the Year by the Minnesota Debate Teachers Association. Science Olympiad Team Competes at State

Team competition is patterned after track tournaments with challenging and motivational events ranging from earth science through physics. Events range from hands-on labs to student built machines, from outdoor events to paper and pencil tests.

by Lorrie Ham The Mound Westonka Science Olympiad Team competed at the Minnesota State Tournament on March 9, finishing 21st out of 30 teams at the University of St. Thomas. Teams qualify for the state competition as a whole, so the team had 23 different events to prepare for at the state level. On competition day, the team needed to overcome a two hour weather delay, technical problems in the building events and last minute roster changes. But team members showed determination and flexibility in placing 21st. "Considering we competed against a strong field of 30 statewide schools I am certainly proud of our Science Olympiad Team,” said Coach Craig Swenson. “As a team we overcame some mechanical difficulties and learned by doing and …

Character Education Partnership Names Orono a Finalist for Character Honor

The district has been asked to provide additional documentation to support its application and will have on on-site visit April 3-4. Dr. David Wangaard, director of The School for Ethical Education in Milford, Conneticut, will serve as the lead evaluator.

From the Orono School District: Orono is one of only five school districts in the nation, along with 28 public schools and two charter schools, to be named a national finalist in the Character Education Partnership (CEP) 2013 National Schools of Character program. “These schools are safe places that have developed cultures of respect and trust,” said CEP President Mark Hyatt. “They show us how an intentional emphasis on character and climate translates into creating the conditions necessary for learning, safety, and success.” "Our students have embraced our character education program and taken leadership of it beyond what we could ever imagine," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Orcutt. Quartet of Wayzata 'Destination Imagination' Teams Advance to State Tournament

Team of Wayzata High School students take first in their challenge at regionals and are favorites heading into the State Tournament in April.

Four of Wayzata's 17 Destination Imagination teams that competed at the Feb. 23 regional tournament at Maple Grove High School will advance to the State Tournament on April 20 at Champlin Park High School. The four teams advancing to start are as follows: The Psychedelic Hippie Kaleidoscopes (freshman and sophomore team from Wayzata High School), took 1st place in Challenge D – Change in Realitee with a raw score of 245. In this improvisational challenge the team must create a five-minute improvisational skit about life after a dramatic change and how the characters adapt to this change. They must also research different communication techniques and integrate them into their skit.  Using only white T-shirts and washable markers, team …

At the end of each quarter teachers are asked to name a distinguished student in each broad subject area for each grade level.

by Lorrie Ham A total of 24 Mound Westonka High School students who exhibited outstanding effort, citizenship and academic achievement for the second quarter of the 2012-2013 school year were honored at the quarterly Distinguished Student Breakfasts at the high school Feb. 7 and 8. These students are invited to a breakfast with their parents where each teacher's nomination is read to the group and each student introduced. This long-time tradition, started by retired teachers Roger and Jan Fischbach, is now planned and hosted by a faculty committee. Westonka Student Headed to D.C. for Elite Journalism and Media Conference

Abraham Thaler was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in journalism and media studies.

Abraham Thaler, a student at Mound Westonka High School has been selected to represent Minnesota as a National Youth Correspondent to the 2013 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University. Thaler joins a select group of students from all over the country for an intensive study of journalism and media. Thaler was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in journalism and media studies.
