Sheriff Says Water Patrol Units Will Be Out in Force During Memorial Day Weekend

As usual, Hennepin County's most popular lake is expected to see high traffic this weekend.

Memorial Day brings with it Minnesota's first big boating weekend of the year, and 2012 will be no different. While forecasts call for less than ideal weather for water recreation, Hennepin County Rich Stanek made clear Friday morning that water patrol units would be out in force during the holiday. "There will be a small window for good boating weather," Sheriff Stanek said standing on the shores of Lake Minnetonka in Spring Park. "It will mean crowded lakes, accesses and launches, so boaters need to be courteous." Additionally, the state's bass fishing season opens this weekend, which Sheriff Stanek said will add to traffic and access demand. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office responds to and investigates all water-related incidents …

Take Note: Expect Ramped up Invasive Species Enforcement During Memorial Day Weekend

State inspectors will be stationed at public boat accesses throughout the area, including Lake Minnetonka; results from enforcement efforts this spring indicate about 16 percent of watercraft users are violating state law.

For this weekend and entire summer, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced it will considerably ramp up its boat inspections, enforcement efforts and educational campaign to prevent the spread of invasive zebra mussels and other AIS. "This weekend is the start of the summer water recreation season in Minnesota, and we need everyone's cooperation to protect our waters," said DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr. "While the DNR is devoting more resources than ever to this problem, it takes only one careless act to infest your favorite lake or river forever." This …

Deephaven Man OK After Going Through the Ice

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is urging people to use caution on all bodies of water due to thin ice and open water.

A Deephaven man piloting an ice boat went into the water Saturday near Big Island after breaking through thin ice, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. He was one of three individuals who broke through the ice on Hennepin County lakes on the final day of 2011. The Excelsior Fire Department, Wayzata Fire Department, Long Lake Fire Department and the Minnesota State Patrol responded to the Lake Minnetonka incident. The ice boat operator was an adult male from Deephaven and was not injured after making it to shore one his own.   Also on Saturday, two men broke through the ice on Lake Riley in Eden Prairie. Lake Riley is located in Carver and Hennepin Counties. The men were not injured. Earlier this week, on Dec. 27, another ice …
