Westonka Swim and Dive Remains Undefeated, Wins Maroon and Gold Invite

The White Hawks marked their third consecutive first-place invitational finish, and they remain undefeated in dual meets for the season.

The Mound Westonka-Holy Family swim and dive team continues to surprise its opponents this season. On Sept. 27 the White Hawks faced the Dassel-Cokato Chargers in a dual meet at home. Leading off with a first place finish (2:01.34) was the varsity 200-yard medley relay team of freshmen Shea Braden, Clare Simon and Brie LaVelle, and senior Mackenzie Braden. The team of juniors Sari Mailey and captain Maggie Green, freshman Sally Stark and eighth-grader Ryann Beyer earned points with third-place finish.   In the varsity 200-yard freestyle, senior captains Grace Polusny and Paige Beyer finished in 2nd and 3rd place; eighth-grader Rhiannon Mailey was fourth. Orono Twins Shine at State Track Meet

In sports and school, twins Stephanie and Emily Knight pace themselves for success.

When their parents suggested they join the track team, Stephanie and Emily Knight were hesitant.  “Track is very physically and mentally demanding,” said Emily, a sophomore at Orono High School. “It took a lot of persuasion to convince me.” Eventually, the twins joined the team and never looked back. Now teammates, the girls placed well at the Minnesota State Track and Field Championships over the weekend at Hamline University.  Stephanie placed third in the Class AA 800-meter run. Emily placed seventh in the 400-meter dash.  “I was amazed,” said Stephanie. “I had no idea I had it in me.” The twins celebrated with lunch at their favorite restaurant, Leeann Chin. Photos: Meet Lake Minnetonka's Academic All-State Wrestler

Junior wrestler Tyler Hebig of Mound Westonka High School Tyler Hebig earns second-team Academic All-State.

Mound Westonka High School junior Tyler Hebig was recently named to The Guillotine Academic All-State Second Team. “The Guillotine” is Minnesota’s amateur wrestling newsmagazine and website, and honored 30 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third team members and 45 honorable mention wrestlers. Criteria for the award was a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA, at least 15 varsity matches wrestled last season with a 60 percent winning percentage and was limited to juniors and seniors.   Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, state placement and cumulative GPA. Hebig is a three-time state entrant, has a 3.98 cumulative GPA and an impressive 115-25 overall career record.   “Tyler is the epitome of a top student-athlete," …

White Hawks Logo Gets Extreme Makeover

A Sharper, Updated Look for Westonka’s Student Programs

Westonka spirit is getting a face lift. The Westonka School District unveiled an updated White Hawks sports logo this week. The new logo replaces the old White Hawks logo that has been in use since the late 1990s. The White Hawks logo—not to be confused with the Westonka district logo—is used exclusively by the high school and middle school athletic teams, official school district clubs and activities and to identify and promote district sports events and activities. The reasons for the update were threefold, according to the district: it was time to refresh the White Hawks image and bring it up to date; creating a consistent brand image for all district sports and activities helps reinforce the Westonka brand; and providing a well-…
