Excelsior Resident Earns Exercise and Movement Sciences Degree from University of VT

The university conferred degrees on an estimated 3,258 graduates last week.

Mya Magney of Excelsior received a BS degree in exercise and movement sciences from the University of Vermont's College of Nursing & Health Sciences. Magney received the degree during commencement ceremonies May 19. The university conferred degrees this year on an estimated 3,258 graduates, including 2,577 bachelor's, 439 master's, 122 doctoral, and 106 M.D. degree recipients, in addition to 14 post-baccalaureate certificates. Among degree recipients were students from 44 states 17 countries.

15 Lake Minnetonka College Students Excelling at St. Olaf College

Lake Minnetonka communities were well represented at St. Olaf's "Honors Day" earlier this month—which recognizes students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.60 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

The following local residents were among nearly 900 St. Olaf College students who were recognized for academic achievement at the college's annual Honors Day convocation on May 3. Honors Day recognizes students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.60 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The convocation also recognizes students who have been awarded scholarships and fellowships, including Fulbright scholars, Goldwater scholars and senior members of leadership and academic honor societies. Lake Minnetonka Women Enter Phi Beta Kappa

Kate Johnson and Mary Margaret Smith from the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University are inducted into the prestigious honor society.

Mary Margaret (Maggie) Smith, a 2009 graduate of Mound Westonka, and Kate Johnson, a 2009 graduate of Holy Family, were accepted into the Theta of Minnesota Chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa Society at St. John’s University on Tuesday, April 23, along with 73 of their classmates. Johnson and Smith attended kindergarten through seventh grade together at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School in Mound. In eighth grade, Johnson went on to Holy Family High School in Victoria, and Smith began high school at Mound Westonka. Both girls excelled at their respective high schools—both academically and in extracurricular activities. Excelsior College Student Spends Spring Break Focusing on Homelessness

Caitlin Beauchamp of Excelsior traveled with 13 other Marquette students to Chicago and performed service focusing on homelessness.

Caitlin Beauchamp, a sophomore biomechanics major at Marquette University, attended a Marquette Action Program (MAP) spring break service trip through Marquette's Campus Ministry program. Beauchamp, from Excelsior, traveled with 13 other Marquette students to Chicago and performed service focusing on homelessness. Since 1977, MAP has offered students the chance to work and interact with people all over the United States. Sponsored by Marquette's Campus Ministry, the trips expose students to aspects of poverty, racism and the lives of the disabled in today's society. Depending on the site, students may be doing anything from assisting in classrooms to preparing meals at homeless shelters to repairing houses devastated by storms. This year, …

Campus News: Lake Minnetonka Area College Students Earn Academic Honors

Lake Minnetonka Patch recognizes dozens of area college students for their recent academic achievements.

Michigan Technological University honored the achievements of nearly 500 graduates last month at mid-year commencement. Among the honorees was Andrea Walvatne of Long Lake, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. The following students from the Lake Minnetonka area were named to the fall Dean's List at Creighton University for the fall semester of the 2012-2013 academic year. Full-time students who earn a 3.5 grade-point average or better on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the Dean's Honor Roll. Elise Engquist, an Excelsior resident and member of the Bowdoin College Class of 2015, was honored for academic excellence during the college's annual Sarah and James Bowdoin Day ceremony, which took place Sept. 28. One hundred student-athletes are on the 2012 season football roster at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. The Falcons are coached by Matt Walker. The roster includes: Long Lake resident Jeffrey Freeman, majoring in theater studies at Emerson College, is part of Emerson Stage's production of The Grapes of Wrath as "Casy." Kyla Gill of Long Lake earned Dean's List honors for the Spring 2012 semester at Maryville University in St. Louis. Gill is a student in Maryville's College of Arts and Sciences. Lauren Elizabeth DeJute of Orono was named to the Miami University President's List for achieving a perfect 4.0 grade point average for second semester of the 2011-12 academic year. Campus News: Lake Minnetonka College Kids Earn Academic Honors

Lake Minnetonka college students received degrees and honors on campuses across the country.

Seven Lake Minnetonka area college students have been awarded degrees from Marquette University in Milwaukee. Charles Velie, a resident of Wayzata and a first-year student at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, is listed on the honor roll with distinction. To be listed on the SMU honor roll with distinction, students must be in the top 10 percent of their school of record. SMU's spring 2012 enrollment included 10,471 students. Catherine Portmann of Orono recdntly graduated from Fort Lewis College. Portmann received a bachelor of arts degree with a major in psychology. Six students from the area are recipients of the University of Wisconsin-Stout's "Chancellor's Award" for the spring 2012 semester. The award is presented to students …
