Second Phase of Lake Minnetonka Sonar Survey Gets Green Light

After finding 75 objects potentially made by humans, Maritime Heritage Minnesota will be back at work this spring.

Lake Minnetonka will become the first body of water in Minnesota to have entirely undergone a remote-sensing survey to locate submerged cultural resources. Maritime Heritage Minnesota has been awarded a grant for completion of the second phase of a sonar survey to locate maritime and nautical archaeological sites on the bottom of Lake Minnetonka. Results of the project's first phase, which surveyed lower Lake Minnetonka and Crystal Bay in the upper lake, revealed several new wreck sites and 75 annomolies that may represent human-made objects. Sonar Imaging of Lake Minnetonka IDs New Wrecks

Maritime Heritage Minnesota has identified as many as 75 sonar anomalies believed to be human made.

Some exciting news has been announced by Maritime Heritage Minnesota (MHM) following completion of a side and down imaging sonar survey of Lower Lake Minnetonka and Crystal Bay in the Upper Lake. From the survey, MHM designated through the Office of the State Archaeologist, three new nautical archaeological sites:  Coordinates for the new sites will be released once archaeological documentation is completed. The MHM has also designated one maritime archaeological site near the Big Island Steamboat Pier and completed necessary site forms to provide five known wrecks with archaeological designations: Maritime Heritage Society has additionaly filed a site form update for the already-designated wreck, the White Bear (21-HE0281).  In all, 152 …
