Team of Wayzata High School students take first in their challenge at regionals and are favorites heading into the State Tournament in April.

Four of Wayzata's 17 Destination Imagination teams that competed at the Feb. 23 regional tournament at Maple Grove High School will advance to the State Tournament on April 20 at Champlin Park High School. The four teams advancing to start are as follows: The Psychedelic Hippie Kaleidoscopes (freshman and sophomore team from Wayzata High School), took 1st place in Challenge D – Change in Realitee with a raw score of 245. In this improvisational challenge the team must create a five-minute improvisational skit about life after a dramatic change and how the characters adapt to this change. They must also research different communication techniques and integrate them into their skit. Using only white T-shirts and washable markers, team …

by Lorrie Ham A total of 24 Mound Westonka High School students who exhibited outstanding effort, citizenship and academic achievement for the second quarter of the 2012-2013 school year were honored at the quarterly Distinguished Student Breakfasts at the high school Feb. 7 and 8. These students are invited to a breakfast with their parents where each teacher's nomination is read to the group and each student introduced. This long-time tradition, started by retired teachers Roger and Jan Fischbach, is now planned and hosted by a faculty committee. Kyla Gill of Long Lake earned Dean's List honors for the Spring 2012 semester at Maryville University in St. Louis. Gill is a student in Maryville's College of Arts and Sciences. Lauren Elizabeth DeJute of Orono was named to the Miami University President's List for achieving a perfect 4.0 grade point average for second semester of the 2011-12 academic year. Four local students attending Miami University have achieved a 3.5 grade point average or better and been named to the Dean's List: Three local students recently graduated from Miami University during spring commencement exercises at Yager Stadium. Jameson Johnson, a student at the University of San Diego, was selected for Mortar Board—a national honor society recognizing students for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. Johnson is from Mound and an economics major and real estate minor, with an emphasis in commercial real estate. Johnson expects to graduate in 2013. He graduated from Mound Westonka High School in 2008. He plans to open his own commercial real estate business. Emily Ferguson, a member of the class of 2014 at Skidmore College, earned term honors for the spring semester. She is the daughter of Merrill Ferguson and Shauna Barry-Ferguson of Greenwood.
