Looking for some family fun during holiday break? Here are a few ideas from the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum to cure "cabin fever" and even "burn off" a few calories. Arboretum buildings will close early Christmas Eve day (at 3 p.m.) and buildings and grounds will be closed entirely on Christmas Day—Tuesday, Dec. 25—but open the rest of the week. The 2012 version of Canadian Pacific's Holiday Train will pull into Loretto on Thursday, Dec 13. The Holiday Train will arrive in Loretto at approximately 4:15 p.m. with the show beginning at approximately 4:30 p.m. This year's performers will be Juno award winning Tracey Brown and roots music sensation TheClaytones. Local activities will begin at 3 p.m. and continue to 6 p.m., including the KRWC Road Show, hot chocolate and cookies, Kiddie Train, horse drawn wagon rides (weather permitting) and more. Wayzata’s annual Tree Lighting Celebration takes place this year Nov. 30 and will feature horse-drawn carriage rides, choir performances, story readings and more to welcome in the holiday season. Mayor Ken Willcox will bring holiday cheer to Lake Street when he flips the switch to light Wayzata’s official Christmas tree. An outdoor Christmas market will feature vendors selling seasonal and gift items. Lake street retailers will be open until 9 p.m. and offering holiday specials throughout the day. The Muni will host an outdoor bar from 5 to 7 p.m., serving hot drinks such as coffee, cider, hot chocolate, mulled wine, Schnapps and more. Despite facing the challenges of having Parkinson's disease, Plymouth resident Mike Justak each year puts on a great holiday lighting display—complete with music and much more. For the past three years the display has gotten bigger and better. Justak works on it for almost a year beforehand. This year's display has 40,000 LED lights and now five more homes in the neighborhood are involved. A 17-foot tree is part of the display, as well as a 25-foot flowering crab wrapped in 4,000 LED lights. You can listen to Justak's own radio station take in the musical and light display each winter in Plymouth.
