Where Are Hennepin County Residents Going?

A new U.S. Census Bureau map of migration patterns between counties shows Hennepin County residents leaving for other Minnesota counties in droves.

Hennepin County stole eight residents from Maine’s Penobscot County between 2006 and 2010. Meanwhile, it lost 10 people to the Aleutians East Borough in Alaska during the same time period. A U.S. Census Bureau interactive map that went live Tuesday emphasizes just how far flung movements are between the 1.1 million-person county and the rest of the country. During the survey period, 31,084 people moved to Hennepin County from a different state while 30,550 people moved from here to a different state. Movement wasn’t limited to the United States either. Hennepin County had 9,268 people move in from abroad. Of course, migration was biggest within Minnesota—and Hennepin County saw nearly 10,000 more people leave than come in. The county had …

I lived here in the mid '80's, moved on and then returned last year. Conservatives back then were telling us the same thing -- DFL wackos were running MN into bankruptcy. Hasn't quite happened. Not saying here that it won't, but aging liberal pols like Dayton, Oberstar and their ilk will be long gone when (and if) we become Detroit. Sid Hartman will still be with us, though.   more ›

Hennepin County residents die earlier and get STDs more frequently than people in most of the state’s other counties, according to data the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Wisconsin Population Health Institute released Wednesday. The County Health Rankings study rated counties in two categories of “health outcomes” and four categories of “health factors” that influence those outcomes. Justice for Some of the Youngest: County Attorney's Newsletter

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office releases its February 2013 newsletter.

Editor's Note: The following is a Hennepin County Attorney's Office press release. This month, we have had partial resolutions in two very difficult cases. In both instances, young people took up guns to solve their problems, killing other children. The crimes are almost incomprehensible, young boys shot while riding their bike or sleeping on the couch. And there are other victims, like Terrell Mayes, whose killer we still hope to bring to justice. These are some of the hardest cases for our office. It's our job to prosecute these crimes, but we also try to prevent violence from happening in the first place. That's one reason we are proposing some common sense gun violence prevention reforms at the legislature. It's also why, through our …

Ground Breaks on Hennepin County's $30 Million Emergency Comm Center

Sheriff says building is not just a need but a critical need, predicts Hennepin County's emergency communications would be in jeopardy without it.

After committing more than $30 million to the project last December, a ceremonial groundbreaking Monday morning marked the start of meaningful construction on Hennepin County's new dispatch facility and emergency communications center. The building will be the most advanced of its kind in the upper Midwest, according to county officials, when it is completed sometime during the second half of 2014—with technological capabilities that will enable citizens anywhere in Hennepin County to text, e-mail and send video to emergency dispatchers in real time.  "This is an important day for Hennepin County, and I don't want to understate that at all," Sheriff Rich Stanek said. "The residents expect 911 to work every time without fail and without …
