Water temperatures on Lake Minnetonka are currently in the 60s, even though air temperatures this week have been in the 70s.
On Lake Minnetonka, there are free life jackets available that boaters may borrow for the day. The program called "Kids Don’t Float" is a partnership between the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Safe Kids Northwest Metro Minneapolis and North Memorial Medical Center. Sheriff Stanek says 87 arrests for boating while intoxicated were made last year in Hennepin County, promises water patrol will have "all boats" on lakes and rivers this Memorial Day.
On Tuesday, Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek was at the Water Patrol station in Spring Park saying deputies, state troopers and DNR enforcement agents will be out in full force this Memorial Day. Related posts:

Standards for ice out differ between Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and Freshwater Society.
Today, at 4 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office determined the Ice Out is official. The declaration is made when a boat can be piloted on Lake Minnetonka through the "Narrows" around Big Island and back to the Sheriff’s Water Patrol Unit on Lake Minnetonka in Spring Park. The Freshwater Society, the official declarer of ice out on Lake Minnetonka, uses different standards. With more and more bays seeing open water, Freshwater Society will be monitoring conditions closely and make the official "call" when it is possible to travel by small boat from any one shore to any other shore through any passage on the lake.

Residents learned about the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office at an open house April 26 Sheriff’s Enforcement Services Division in Brooklyn Park. The annual event included K-9 demonstrations, vehicles, boats and equipment to tour, dive team underwater demonstration, crime scene investigators and displays, fingerprinting booth, mounted patrol horse and more. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is holding its annual open house Friday at the patrol headquarters in Brooklyn Park. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 9401 83rd Ave. N., Brooklyn Park. There also will be gun locks available "while supplies last," according to a Thursday news release. “For those who have a firearm in their home, this lock will provide an additional safety measure for storage,” Stanek said in a Thursday news release. “Safely securing and handling a weapon is especially important in households with children or households where children may visit, such as a grandparent’s home.” There will be canine demonstrations and a fingerprinting booth at the event, according to a news release on the Sheriff's Office …

With the explosions at the Boston Marathon, the Sheriff’s Office is asking people to be vigilant.

Today, authorities are investigating explosions at the Boston Marathon that have killed two people and have injured approximately 100 others. According to state, local and national security sources, there are no known threats in Minnesota or Hennepin County. As a reminder, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office urges citizens to be engaged in public safety in our community by reporting suspicious activity. Grissom, an HCSO Narcotics K9, has retired after nine years of service to the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office. His deputy partner will keep him at home and he will spend his retirement as a family pet. He is credited with the seizure of approximately 3,349.32 lbs of marijuana, 28 lbs of methamphetamine, 1.5 lbs of heroin, 127 lbs of cocaine, 4.1 lbs of crack cocaine, 209 grams of mushrooms, 135.5 grams of hash, and 1,839 tabs of ecstasy, as well as $2,249,700 in US currency. Please notice that stand up paddle boards are considered a "vessel" and also require an accessible Coast guard approved (PFD) life jacket for each person aboard. Same rules for children. They also require a signaling device (whistle) and a flashlight at night.
