Thanks to Snowy Spring, Gale Woods Farm Taps Record Maple Syrup Cache

Summer camp registrations open now, "Saturday Mornings on the Farm" schedule and maple syrup season update.

Farm Update from Farmer Tim While I am really glad it finally warmed up this past weekend for our Spring Into Farming celebration, the cold, snowy April that we all complained about was actually good for a few things. One of them was our syrup production. The maple sap flowed vigorously for about three weeks right up until last Sunday. Tied our record for production—40 gallons of syrup from about 50 trees. That’s 1,600 gallons of sap we boiled down! Last time we made that much it was spread out over a whole month, but this year we produced that much in two weeks during which the evaporator was running almost non-stop. A big thanks to the volunteers and groups that helped us out collecting sap and tending the fire. Come pick up a quart or a…

Photos: Kids Welcome New Babies During 'Farmyard Fun Day' at Gale Woods Farm

Baby lambs, farm-fresh pancakes, wool crafts and farm games kept kids outside and busy Tuesday morning.

Kids arrived at Gale Woods Farm by the bus load Tuesday morning for "Farmyard Fun Day." Highlighting the spring tradition: a growing brood of infant lambs—three of which were born just hours before kids stormed the barn. With several Lake Minnetonka area school districts on spring break, parents also found an educational activity at a reasonable price ($5). Gale Woods Farm, which is operated by the Three Rivers Park District, gave kids a chance to check the hen coop for eggs, make a bracelet from recently-shorn wool and whip up fresh pancakes using ingredients gathered from the farm. It was the baby lambs, however, that commanded the most attention, and farm volunteers allowed kids to briefly pet the new arrivals and take photos with them …

Spring! Updates from Gale Woods Farm

"The sap finally started flowing today, and it looks like we’ll be boiling sap and tending to new lambs at the same time."

Spring has been a long time in coming this year, but she always arrives no matter how late she is for the dance. The sap finally started flowing today, and it looks like we’ll be boiling sap and tending to new lambs at the same time. Click here for more about syruping this season. I try to avoid this by waiting to put the rams in with the ewes until December and thereby ensuring lambing doesn’t begin until April 1, when sap season is usually ending. Not this year! The good news is that the late snow cover and frozen ground may actually result in a couple weeks of thawing days and freezing nights. That would mean a good sap flow, which would make up for last year’s dismal syrup production. It’s all going to happen fast, so don’t blink or …

Down on the Fram: January News and Notes from Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista

The year to come; lamb and pork cut update; a beef price increase; upcoming events.

Submitted by Gale Woods Farm Happy New Year! Farming is a wonderfully seasonal endeavor. Now that we’ve had a couple months of quiet around the farm, we start dreaming of the days when the white blanket of snow gets replaced by the dripping of sap, the birthing of lambs and the first green onion shoots poking up through the soil in the greenhouse. We are looking forward to experiencing and sharing the cycles of another year with you in 2013. Thanks for being a part of Gale Woods Farm. More Lamb and Pork Cuts Coming Soon A nice variety of pork and lamb cuts will be added in mid-January to our current pasture-raised meat offerings.
