Excelsior City Council Changes Beer Ordinance

Mayor Nick Ruehl was not present at the council's Nov. 7 meeting, and Councilman Greg Miller acted in the leadership position for the Excelsior City Council.

Brewer Taproom Requests Ordinance Change Excelsior Brewing Company seeks a license to open a brewer taproom in Excelsior. Their request follows a new state law that allows breweries to sell their beer onsite. Currently the city does not permit a liquor license without a restaurant. The new ordinance would allow for the onsite sell of liquor without a restaurant. The president and two partners of the Excelsior Brewing Company attended the meeting and emphasized that they are not opening a bar; they are only selling their beers onsite. Council members Miller, Olson, and Caron voted in favor of the ordinance while Fulkerson dissented. Planning for a New Library in Excelsior

Current status and future plans for a new Excelsior Public Library were discussed at an advisory committee meeting on Sept. 21.

The process for building a new public library for Excelsior was started four or five years ago, according to Hennepin County Commissioner Jan Callison. “Getting the County Board to approve it was a milestone,” said Callison at the most recent library advisory committee meeting held on September 21 at the Southshore Center in Shorewood. The first community meetings about the new library began late in 2010. As plans progressed, a library advisory committee was created and began meeting in July 2011. The committee, which includes Mayor Nick Ruehl, has provided input on such topics as building style preferences and what the library means to Excelsior and the surrounding communities.
