With inclement weather almost always come questions about the school district’s procedures regarding “snow days.” This column is intended to help you gain a better understanding of how we arrive at those decisions. The decision to shorten a school day, to close school entirely or to remain open is always based on safety. Saving money or past practice are not considerations, as some people may believe. Orono Middle School English teacher Katie Stanley and Orono Intermediate School fourth-grade teacher Lanette Marchbanks have been granted tenure by Orono Schools. This noteworthy accomplishment was celebrated in a ceremony as part of the Nov. 19 School Board meeting. Also recognized during the ceremony were Stanley’s mentor, Dr. Amanda Sass-Henke, and OMS Principal Dr. Patricia Wroten, as well as Marchbanks’ mentor, Kristen Thatcher, and OIS Principal Dr. Scott Alger. Stanley came to Orono from Lakeville Area Schools and worked in Apple Valley-Rosemount-Eagan Schools prior to that. She has a bachelor of science degree in secondary education and a bachelor of arts degree in writing from Drake University, where she graduated Magna Cum …

by Dr. Karen Orcutt, Superintendent of Orono Schools Now that the weather is nicer and our schedules are busier, traffic conditions along Old Crystal Bay Road have become very concerning. Our greatest concern is students crossing the street between the middle school and high school at dismissal time. Because the Orono Police Department is also concerned with what they are seeing, we met recently to address the issue. We are very fortunate to have an ongoing relationship with the department so we can address issues such as this one proactively. In addition to cooperating with the police, we are working with our own staff and First Student Transportation (our bus company) to improve safety in the areas over which we have control. We are …

That amenity—perhaps a luxury at that point in time —is what attracted many other settlers.
