David Osmek Defeats Connie Doepke in Close State Senate District 33 Primary

In one of the closest races from Tuesday's primary, David Osmek edges fellow Republican Connie Doepke in State Senate District 33 contest.

Editor's note: Patch incorrectly reported results of this race Tuesday night. Local editor Jay Corn apologizes for the error and regrets any confusion it may have caused. Mound City Councilman David Osmek has narrowly defeated fellow Republican Connie Doepke in Tuesday's State Senate District 33 primary, according to unofficial results posted by the Minnesota Secretary of State. "Connie just called me, with a heartfelt congratulation," Osmek wrote on Twitter just after midnight. "Its time to move forward together..and win in November." The race was among the state's closest and less than 2 percent of the vote seperated the two candidates as Tuesday turned to Wednesday. With all 39 precincts reporting, Osmek's margin of victory appears to …

Your Guide to Today's Primary Election

Voters will finalize November ballot today, including primary races between Cindy Pugh and Steve Smith, Connie Doepke and David Osmek and Erik Paulsen and John W. Howard III.

Voters throughout the state will take to the polls today for primary elections that will finalize November's ballot. The Minnesota Secretary of State has set up a quick precinct finder for those unsure of where they should go to vote. Polls at most precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., but residents are asked to check with their specific precinct for exact polling hours. Polling places for some residents may have also changed since the last election due to redistricting. Primary elections in Minnesota are partisan ballots, so voters must stick to one party on that side of the ballot. County and judicial races are non-partisan. Voters will be asked to designate their party preference. If you designate a party preference, only votes …

Just voted for John Howard because Erik Paulsen is not a moderate! It's time someone brings common sense back to the Republican Party. Jim Ramstad got something done, and wasn't influenced by the extreme right wing nuts like Erik Paulsen. A John Howard v. Brian Barnes race would be a race between two moderates who want to change this dysfunctional system, and that's something this district …   more ›

U.S. Congressman Says Candidate's Campaign Literature Contains Unapproved Quote

Erik Paulsen says fellow Republican Connie Doepke's recent mailing contained an unapproved quote and that he supports her opponent in upcoming primary.

U.S. Congressman Erik Paulsen took to Twitter Monday morning to make clear he did not approve of a recent mailing sent out by a Republican candidate for State Senate. Connie Doepke is challenging GOP-endorsed David Osmek for the State Senate District 33 seat, and an Aug. 14 primary will determine who moves on to the general election in November to face DFLer Judy Rogosheske.  The mailing in question contains a prominent photo of Doepke with Congressman Paulsen—accompanied by a quote that reads, "I wish I could have served with Connie in the Minnesota House, she's a great Representative and a proven leader." Paulsen, through his campaign manager, issued a statement via Twitter that read, in part, "I support the endorsed Republican candidate…

Campaign Finance Report: Connie Doepke, State Senate District 33

A look inside the campaign finance report for State Senate hopeful.

Editor's note: Patch has posted in-depth looks at the campaign finance reports of each candidate running for State House and State Senate. An index is attached at the bottom of this post. Local candidates running for state office have provided a first glimpse into their campaign war chests. Candidates were required to file detailed reports of receipts and expenditures with Minnesota’s Campaign Finance Board by July 30 and itemize donors, lobbyist contributions and disbursements. Local Republican Connie Doepke is running for the State Senate District 33 seat after serving one term in the State House. The seat is being vacated by retiring State Senator Gen Olson, and Doepke will face off against David Osmek in a primary scheduled for Aug. 14…

Republican Candidates for State House, State Senate Define Stances (Part 1)

Republican candidates for State Senate District 33 and State House District 33B address jobs, housing and their top priorities.

A full house jammed Wayzata City Hall Thursday night for a candidate forum hosted by the Wayzata/Plymouth chapter of the League of Women Voters. Republican candidates seeking seats in the State House and State Senate fielded questions for about an hour, at times drawing stark differences between themselves and their opponents. Primaries on Aug. 14 will determine which GOP candidates advance to the November general election to face DFL challengers. Patch will present several posts over the coming days recapping responses to questions posed during Thursday's forum, and a brief bio of each GOP candidate appears at the bottom of this post. The forum will air in its entirety on the Lake Minnetonka Cable Commission, and Patch will post air times…

Lake Minnetonka Lawmakers Back Vikings Stadium

Both of Lake Minnetonka's Republican state legislators voted in favor of a new Vikings stadium.

Both of Lake Minnetonka's state representatives voted in favor of a new Vikings stadium late Monday. State Representative Connie Doepke (R-33B), who represents many of Lake Minnetonka's eastern communities, and Rep. Steve Smith (R-33A), who represents the western side of the lake, were among 73 lawmakers—33 of which were Republicans—who supported a bill that would build a new stadium on the site of the Metrodome. Monday's passage of the bill in the House, however, doesn't guarantee a new home for the Vikings. The Senate is expected to take up its version of the bill on Tuesday. If the Senate approves the measure, a committee made up from members of the House and Senate will need to negotiate a final bill and get approval from their …

State Rep. Doepke on State Surplus, Redistricting and Pending Legislation

Connie Doepke's district was affected by last month's redistricting.

Fiscal Update: Minnesota has a $1.2 billion surplus!  The Reform 2.0 plan is working. Good fiscal management by Republicans in the Minnesota Legislature has turned the state’s bleak economic outlook from a year ago into more positive news. We received the very good news on Feb. 29 from the Office of Minnesota Management and Budget—according to the February forecast, we have an additional $323 million surplus. Add that to the $876 million surplus from last November’s forecast and Minnesota has a $1.25 billion surplus.   The first payment to the K-12 school shift will be made this March in the amount of $318 million. We have seen stronger than expected growth in Minnesota’s private sector largely due to the legislature’s commitment to no new…

How Redistricting Affects Lake Minnetonka Communities

State Supreme Court's redistricting map splits Lake Minnetonka into two State House Districts.

Redistricting maps released Monday afternoon split Lake Minnetonka into two State House Districts but leave the lake's State Senate and U.S. Congressional assignments the same. Northern Lake Minnetonka municipalities, from Wayzata west to the northern half of Jennings Bay, are now part of State House District 33A. Southern Lake Minnetonka communities, from Deephaven west to Tonka Bay, remain in District 33B. Rep. Connie Doepke currently represents House District 33B, while Rep. Steve Smith presently represents District 33A. Both are republicans up for re-election in November. All Lake Minnetonka residents will continue to reside in State Senate District 33, a seat occupied by State Senator Gen Olson. Olson has said she does not plan to …

Local Legislators Receive Friend of Public Education Award

Lake Minnetonka lawmakers recognized for their commitment to education.

State Senator Gen Olson and State Representative Connie Doepke have been honored by the Association of Metropolitan School Districts (AMSD) with its Friend of Public Education Award. The award is given annually to Minnesota leaders who demonstrate support and advocacy of public education and AMSD legislative platform initiatives. Olson and Doepke were selected for their ability to work in a bipartisan and cooperative manner on important education issues, according to an announcement issued by the Orono School District. They sponsored key AMSD initiatives including mandate relief, fund transfer flexibility, simplification of the required ballot language for renewal of a capital project levy and legislation creating an alternative pathway …
