Teen Pleads Not Guilty in Death of Former Orono H.S. Student

Colton Gleason was a 2010 graduate of Orono High School. He played both football and soccer at Orono High School and worked for his family's business—New Glow Flooring & Surface Enhancement in Medina.

A teenager charged with murder in connection with last year's death of former Orono High School student Colton Gleason in St. Cloud has pleaded not guilty, and a trial has been scheduled for August. Jessen Smithers, 17, was arrested several days after Gleason was attacked last September near the campus of St. Cloud State University. Smithers was previously certified to stand trial as an adult. Teenager Charged in Orono High School Alum's Death Will Be Tried as an Adult

Colton Gleason died last September of injuries sustained during an assault in St. Cloud.

A Stearns County judge ruled Monday that a 17-year-old male charged with causing the death of a former Orono High School student and soccer star will be tried as an adult. The St. Cloud Times was the first to report that Jesse Jean Smithers had been certified as an adult. Smithers is charged with second-degree murder after prosecutors say a punch he threw last September near St. Cloud State University caused Colton Gleason to fall and strike his head. Gleason died the next day at St. Cloud Hospital. St. Cloud Police Chief Blair Anderson said Gleason was in St. Cloud visiting friends and was walking with two other individuals when the attack occurred. Orono Boy's Soccer Team Pauses to Remember Colton Gleason

Orono High School boy's soccer team dedicates their most recent win to Colon Gleason, who recently passed away from injuries sustained during an assault in St. Clout. On Thursday the team retired Gleason's No. 15 jersey.

by Jack Ellis and Sydney Reiners On Thursday, Sept. 27, the Orono boy’s soccer team beat Glencoe-Silver Lake 5-0 in honor of Colton Gleason, a former Orono soccer player who recently passed away on Sept. 20. At half time they retired the No. 15 jersey which Colton and both his brothers before him had worn. Colton like family to the team, and they are currently “celebrating the life of Colton, not mourning his death,” says head varsity coach Derek Engler. “Colton was a great role model for all of us, and this event has only made our community and our Orono soccer family that much stronger,” Engler said. Orono alumni flew in from everywhere to attend the game, and students, present and past, joined in force to support the family. Click here …

Family of Colton Gleason Establishes Memorial Fund

The cousin of Colton Gleason says her family is thankful to the police, public and media for the outpouring of support. A memorial fund has been established to assist the family.

The family of an Orono High School alum who died last week from injuries sustained during an assault in St. Cloud has established a memorial fund in his honor. Charity Dirkman was in Florida when she received a phone call last Thursday with news that her 20-year-old was cousin Colton Gleason was clinging to life in a St. Cloud hospital. Gleason died the next day from head trauma. "He was a good kid, that's for sure," Dirkman said. "He was such an amazing spirit—so loving to his family. This is heartbreaking for everybody, to have to see his parents and brothers go through this." Arrest Made in Connection with Orono H.S. Alum's Death

Prosecutors have charged a 17-year-old with second-degree murder.

A teenager has been arrested by St. Cloud police and charged with causing the death of former Orono High School student Colton Gleason. The St. Cloud Times is reporting 17-year-old Jesse Jean Smithers of Sauk Rapids has been charged with second-degree murder after a punch he allegedly threw last Thursday knocked Gleason to the ground. Gleason died the next day at a St. Cloud hospital from injuries sustained in the assault. The newspaper reports Smithers has denied involvement in Gleason's death. Prosecutors have filed paperwork petitioning the court to certify Smithers as an adult. He will remain in jail without bail until his first court appearance next Tuesday. Those who knew Colton Gleason, as well as many who didn't, took to Twitter over the weekend to express sympathy, share memories and issue pleas for information. Friends of Gleason have started the Twitter hashtag #Justice4Colton in an effort to spread word of the 20-year-old's death and generate leads for the police investigation. The Twitter handle @Justice4Colton has garnered more than 700 followers since being started Saturday.

Orono H.S. Alum Dies After Assault in St. Cloud

Friends of Colton Gleason have started the Twitter hash tag #Justice4Colton in an effort to spread word of the 20-year-old's death and generate leads for the police investigation.

A 2010 graduate of Orono High School died at a St. Cloud hospital Friday night from injuries sustained during an assault near St. Cloud State University. Colton Ryan Gleason was walking with friends just after 11 p.m. Thursday night when, according to a Sunday report by the St. Cloud Times, an occupant got out of of a four-door passenger car and threw a punch. Gleason fell, struck his head and was transported to St. Cloud Hospital. He died less than 24 hours later from what police say was head trauma. The attack occurred in an alleyway between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, an area populated primarily by college students. Update: A memorial fund has been established for the family of Colton Gleason.
