Benefit Planned for Lake Minnetonka Drowning Victim

Benefit takes place Sunday afternoon at Lord Fletcher's in Spring Park.

Kennedy Maddox drowned while swimming near Big Island earlier this week.

Medical Examiner Releases Report on Lake Minnetonka Drowning

The body of Kennedy Maddox was found Thursday evening about one mile northeast of Big Island.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner has officially ruled Kennedy Maddox died of accidental drowning. Maddox was with four friends when he jumped off a 20-foot pleasure craft to go swimming Tuesday afternoon near Big Island and did not resurface. The group was between Big Island and Brackett's Point at the time of the accident. Divers recovered his body just over 24 hours later approximately one mile northeast of Big Island. Maddox, 20, recently graduated from Minnetonka High School. On Thursday friends and classmates gathered for a lakeside vigil in Excelsior to console each other and grieve.

Lakeside Vigil Remembers Kennedy Maddox

Just hours after divers recovered his body, Kennedy Maddox's friends came together to grieve the 20-year-old's sudden death.

Dozens of friends, family and former classmates gathered on the shores of Lake Minnetonka at dusk Wednesday evening to console each other and remember 20-year-old Kennedy Maddox, who drowned Tuesday near Big Island. Oscar Hipp has been friends with Maddox for several years and led a prayer to open the memorial. "We had a connection more than friends, it was almost like we were brothers," Hipp said, tears running down his face. "I knew he had some troubles in his life, and I think sharing them with me got us really close. It's such an unbelievably tough loss." Like most at Wednesday's memorial, Hipp said he will remember Maddox for his infectious laugh, easy-going personality and an ability to make friends with just about everyone he came …

Divers Recover Body of Drowning Victim from Lake Minnetonka

Just over 24 hours after Kennedy Maddox disappeared under the water near Big Island, divers recovered his body Wednesday evening.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office has recovered the body of a drowning victim from Lake Minnetonka.   The victim, a 20-year-old man from Minnetonka identified by friends and family as Kennedy Maddox, had been missing since 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26.   Witnesses reported that the victim had jumped off of a boat into the lake to swim. He began to struggle and never resurfaced. Four other people who were on the boat, were unable to locate him. The group was on a 20-foot pleasure craft off the south end of Big Island at the time. The Sheriff’s Office has been conducting an ongoing search since responding to the incident yesterday. Search Continues for Drowning Victim Near Big Island

Sheriff says five young adults were on a boat near the southern end of Big Island when one jumped off and did not resurface.

Divers continue to search for a 20-year-old male near the southern end of Big Island. The victim jumped off a friend's boat to go swimming around 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, according to witnesses and reports, and did not resurface. Four young adults also on the 20-foot pleasure craft searched for their friend but were unable to locate him. Sonar assets have been requested to aid in the search. Patch is not publishing the name of the man at this time. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, including water rescue units from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, Wayzata and Long Lake. Patch will have additional updates to this story as they become available.
