The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office has made 55 arrests for Boating While Intoxicated (BWI) so far this year, including multiple arrests on Lake Minnetonka. “Intoxicated boat operators are a serious hazard, and they jeopardize the safety of everyone on the water,” said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek. “Take the necessary precautions to prevent impaired boating. Law enforcement needs your help to eliminate this danger from our waterways.” Boat operators are responsible for the safety of the people on board their boat, as well as operating the boat in a manner that maintains a safe environment for other people using the water. Thinking about going out on the boat this weekend and tossing back a six-pack of beer? Better reconsider that. Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conservation officers and county sheriff's water patrol deputies will be out in force June 22-24 for Operation Dry Water. It is part of a nationwide effort to give boating under the influence (BUI) enforcement high visibility prior to the Fourth of July holiday and peak summer boating season. Lake Minnetonka has traditionally been a focus of such patrols throughout the boating season and particularly during increased enforcement campaigns. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office has been cracking down all summer on intoxicated boaters.
A 25-year-old Spring Park man was arrested on Lake Minnetonka yesterday and on booked on probable cause third-degree boating while intoxicated (BWI) and refusing to submit a blood or urine sample for testing. Dustin Byfuglien was taken into custody at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. The arrest took place on Lower Lake South on Lake Minnetonka in Excelsior. Byfuglien was released from jail this morning. The case will be presented to the Lake Minnetonka Conservation District attorney for consideration of charges.
