VIDEO: Wayzata H.S. Mock Crash Evokes Emotions

Students involved in putting on the mock crash May 18 talk about the experience and the impact they hope it has.

For Wayzata High School seniors Mitch Heflin and Anvita Singh, drinking and driving or distracted driving is more than just something on the news. It's something they want to make sure their peers are keenly aware of. With the help of local law enforcement, the school and several other organizations, students got a taste of what it's like to be on the scene of a teen drunken driving accident. The mock crash drill took place at the school's football stadium at 1 p.m. May 18 the day before prom. Agencies involved in this exercise included: students and staff with Wayzata Public Schools, Plymouth Public Safety, the Plymouth Fire Department, Hennepin County Communications, North Memorial Medical Services, Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s …

Wayzata Native Headed to Italy for Summer Study

Sarah Farley will study in Italy with Marquette University's Digital Storytelling Program.

Sarah Farley, a Wayzata native and sophomore at Marquette University, will study in Cagli, Italy, this summer with Marquette's digital storytelling program. Farley is studying in the College of Communication at Marquette. Marquette's digital storytelling program teaches students how to digitally create stories about their surroundings and use multimedia communication in an intercultural environment. Students also learn how to communicate in Italian, with language lessons, excursions and lectures about the Italian culture. At the end of the month-long trip, students present web documentaries they have worked on since the beginning of the program to Marquette faculty and Cagli residents. Wayzata H.S. Hosts 'Moment in Time' Concert

In the mood for jazz or Broadway music? Check out this student concert May 17 and 18.

Wayzata High School choirs will present the "Moment in Time" concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 17, and Friday, May 18, in the school's auditorium. The concert features pop, Broadway and jazz from all decades throughout the 20th century. Highlights of the concert include an arrangement of Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" by senior Paul Kinkade, and the song "It Don't Mean a Thing if It Ain't Got That Swing," featuring senior Thomas Strommen, jazz saxophone soloist. Tickets cost $6 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens and are available at the door or by calling 763-745-6907. Photos: Meet Lake Minnetonka's Academic All-State Wrestler

Junior wrestler Tyler Hebig of Mound Westonka High School Tyler Hebig earns second-team Academic All-State.

Mound Westonka High School junior Tyler Hebig was recently named to The Guillotine Academic All-State Second Team. “The Guillotine” is Minnesota’s amateur wrestling newsmagazine and website, and honored 30 first-team members, 30 second-team members, 30 third team members and 45 honorable mention wrestlers. Criteria for the award was a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA, at least 15 varsity matches wrestled last season with a 60 percent winning percentage and was limited to juniors and seniors.   Points were tallied according to current varsity wins, state placement and cumulative GPA. Hebig is a three-time state entrant, has a 3.98 cumulative GPA and an impressive 115-25 overall career record.   “Tyler is the epitome of a top student-athlete," …

Orono Imagination Fair Gets Kids Thinking

More than 130 Schumann Elementary School students participated in this year's Imagination Fair.

Orono Intermediate School third-grader Braden Smith ponders the Titanic Lego model and information on the ill-fated ship that was created by Louis Sustacek for the Imagination Fair earlier this month at Orono Schumann Elementary. The Imagination Fair showcases the creativity, effective thinking skills and interests of second-grade participants. Projects, which are done outside of school hours, typically focus on science, history, art, research or hobbies—whatever captures a student’s imagination.   All students receive a certificate for their participation, not to mention the admiration of their counterparts in grades 1-3 who are invited to tour the exhibit.  This year, some 135 students participated.

Local Dancers Dazzle at Weekend Recital in Orono

West Metro Dance School performed its spring recital for a full house

Not everyone was fishing Saturday.  Hundreds of people packed the Orono High School auditorium to see the West Metro Dance School recital May 12. Dancers performed numbers ranging from tap to jazz.   West Metro Dance is located in the Discovery Center in Maple Plain.

Orono Baseball Team Wins 10AA Tournament

Orono's 10AA baseball team named champions of Eden Prairie Tournament.

Orono 10AA baseball players gave their moms a special treat for Mothers Day: they won the Eden Prairie Tournament. Orono beat teams from Edina, Apple Vally and Albert Lea, before toppling Eden Prairie in the championship game 10-1.  The boys celebrated the victory with a trip to Dairy Queen.  The team is led by head coach Jim Buck and assistant coaches Richard Jordan, Paul Tichey and John Anderson.

No Name Presents Excelsior Teen with $1,000 for Minnetonka H.S.

Jeremy Nelson was one of five finalists selected by No Name based on essays submitted by parents and teacher’s describing each nominee’s school performance, community service and extracurricular activities.

Jeremy Nelson, 18, of Excelsior was presented with a $1,000 check for Minnetonka High School by No Name Premium Meats and Seafood. Nelson was named a finalist in the No Name Original Kid of the Year contest. Pictured in the photo (from left to right) are Minnetonka High School Principal David Adney, Nelson and No Name Brand Manager Mandy Kennedy. Nelson won a $1,000 scholarship prize, a $1,000 donation to his school and other prizes at a special ceremony during the April 29 Twins home game. Nelson was one of five finalists selected by No Name based on essays submitted by parents and teacher’s describing each nominee’s school performance, community service and extracurricular activities.

Wayzata H.S. Principal Wins Research Award

Jeff Ridlehoover won the 2012 NASSP award for his research paper about high school principalship.

Jeff Ridlehoover, associate principal at Wayzata High School, won the 2012 NASSP Dr. Ted Sizer High School Dissertation Award for his research, “The High School Principalship: An Investigation Into the Essential Leadership Characteristics as Determined by High School Principals and the Teachers Whom They Serve.” The purpose of the annual competition is to focus professional and scholarly attention on the complex issues facing middle level and high school leaders. The premise of Riddlehoover’s research, which supports the core concepts of the NASSP “Breaking Ranks” Framework, was to quantitatively conclude whether a disconnect existed between what high school principals and teachers believed were the most essential leadership …

Orono High School Student Has a Brush With Fame

Orono High School's landmark barn will appear in an upcoming issue of national magazine.

Orono High School senior Alex Walstad was painting the barn near OHS for his class when he was captured by classmate Sarah Stark. The photo appears in the summer issue of the magazine “Communication: Journalism Education Today” with the table of contents. Information provided by the Orono School District.
