The annual Hennepin County Sheriff's Office hosted its annual open house May 17 at the Sheriff's Enforcement Services Division in Brooklyn Park. The event is part of the Law Enforcement week and included highlights suchas dive team demonstrations, extrications using the "jaws of life', mounted patrol and more.
Students involved in putting on the mock crash May 18 talk about the experience and the impact they hope it has.
For Wayzata High School seniors Mitch Heflin and Anvita Singh, drinking and driving or distracted driving is more than just something on the news. It's something they want to make sure their peers are keenly aware of. With the help of local law enforcement, the school and several other organizations, students got a taste of what it's like to be on the scene of a teen drunken driving accident. The mock crash drill took place at the school's football stadium at 1 p.m. May 18 the day before prom. Police responded to a May 14 report on the 1400 block of Wayzata Bouleveard East of a juvenile taking a bike belonging to another and refusing to return it. The bike was found and returned to its owner. No charges were pressed. A taxi driver reported an unpaid fair of $30 May 12 on the 400 block of Willow Drive in Long Lake. The report was received just before 1 a.m. About $6 in loose change was reported stolen from a vehicle parked on the 2000 block of Grand Avenue in Long Lake. African American male with "full afro" caught in a garage rummaging through resident's vehicle.
A Wayzata resident interrupted a burglary Wednesday afternoon on the 100 block of Peavey Lane on the city's west side. Police say they were dispatched to the residence just before 12:30 p.m. and report the homeowner walked into her open garage to find a man inside her vehicle. The suspect ran from the home on foot. He is described as African American and approximately five-feet, ten-inches tall. The suspect had what police describe as a full afro and was wearing dark clothes and carrying a royal blue backpack. Police are asking anyone who saw anything suspicious around the time of this call to please contact the station and are reminding residents to report any suspicious activity by dialing 9-1-1. Fire broke out just before 10 a.m. Wednesday morning.
A faulty air conditioning unit is being blamed for causing a fire Wednesday morning near the Spring Park and Orono border. Long Lake Fire Chief James Van Eyll said police first arrived at the home on Minnie Avenue near the southern shores of North Arm Bay around 9:45 a.m. and found the northern side of the residence on fire. Engines from both Long Lake and Maple Plain quickly extinguished the blaze, but the home's exterior sustained significant damage. Moderate water and smoke damage was also reported on both levels. No injuries to persons or pets were reported.

A local real estate developer pleaded guilty Friday to conspiring to evade paying federal taxes. Jeffrey John Wirth specifically pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States. Wirth, who on August 17, 2011, was indicted along with two co-defendants, including his ex-wife, stated that from at least 2003 through October of 2006, he conspired with his then-wife, Holly Damiani, and their tax return preparer, Michael James Murry, to defraud the Internal Revenue Service by failing to pay their true tax obligations. Wirth is the sole owner and chief executive officer of The Wirth Companies (TWC), a commercial real estate development and management business. Officer Robert Zarrett shot Katherine Gordon after she pointed a gun at him about five miles east of Wayzata.
A Hennepin County grand jury cleared a Golden Valley police officer for his involvement in a fatal shooting last September on Interstate 394, about five miles east of Wayzata. According to reports, Officer Robert Zarrett of the Golden Valley Police Department spotted a car driving 90 mph on the interstate on Sept. 22, 2011. The driver was Katherine Marie Gordon, 58. "Gordon did not pull over, and her car wove in and out of the traffic lanes, still at a high rate of speed," according to a news release posted Thursday afternoon on the city's website. A 31-year-old male from Decorah, IA, was arrested May 6 following a traffic stop near the intersection of Bushaway Road and Wayzata Boulevard. The arrest took place at 11:41 a.m. and executed by a Mound police officer working a special detail in the Wayzata area. A GPS unit was stolen from an unlcocked vehicle parked on the 2000 block of Orchard Lane May 5. Value of the item is estimated at $150. The driver of the vehicle was traveling at 78 mph, according to the State Patrol.
Speed was a factor in the February crash that killed Danielle Renninger, of Excelsior, and three other North Dakota State University students, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Sgt. Jesse Grabow told state media that the driver of the car was traveling at 78 mph when she lost control, crossing the I-94 median and hitting an SUV. The driver of the car was Lauren Peterson, 18 of Prior Lake. Road conditions were poor at the time of the accident near Alexandria on Feb. 20. As the women headed back to school, the State Patrol found that I-94 was slippery and visibility was reduced. There was no evidence of drinking, drug use or texting by the driver.
