Students involved in putting on the mock crash May 18 talk about the experience and the impact they hope it has.
For Wayzata High School seniors Mitch Heflin and Anvita Singh, drinking and driving or distracted driving is more than just something on the news. It's something they want to make sure their peers are keenly aware of. With the help of local law enforcement, the school and several other organizations, students got a taste of what it's like to be on the scene of a teen drunken driving accident. The mock crash drill took place at the school's football stadium at 1 p.m. May 18 the day before prom. Agencies involved in this exercise included: students and staff with Wayzata Public Schools, Plymouth Public Safety, the Plymouth Fire Department, Hennepin County Communications, North Memorial Medical Services, Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s …

Sarah Farley will study in Italy with Marquette University's Digital Storytelling Program.
Sarah Farley, a Wayzata native and sophomore at Marquette University, will study in Cagli, Italy, this summer with Marquette's digital storytelling program. Farley is studying in the College of Communication at Marquette. Marquette's digital storytelling program teaches students how to digitally create stories about their surroundings and use multimedia communication in an intercultural environment. Students also learn how to communicate in Italian, with language lessons, excursions and lectures about the Italian culture. At the end of the month-long trip, students present web documentaries they have worked on since the beginning of the program to Marquette faculty and Cagli residents. Students utilize the storytelling techniques and …
DNR fisheries marking walleye fry to evaluate stocking levels.
Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) fisheries biologists began an eight-year study in 2008 to determine the optimum number of walleye fry that should be stocked back into lakes where eggs are removed for stocking purposes. The first phase of the study focused on marking walleye fry using oxytetracycline (OTC) to differentiate stocked fry from those naturally produced. The last phase will now focus on determining the growth and survival of these marked fish to catchable size. "This is a cutting edge fisheries research project," said Dale Logsdon, DNR fisheries research biologist. "It uses technology to better understand biology and to help guide management practices that result in the maximum number of walleyes for the public to…

County Board Chair Mike Opat delivered the 2012 address today in Plymouth.
Hennepin County Board Chair Mike Opat gave the State of the County address today at the Plymouth Creek Center in Plymouth. The TwinWest Chamber of Commerce hosted the event. A State of the County address hasn't been given since 2009. The reason? "There have been no speeches because given the state of the economy and federal and state budgets there wasn’t much I could say that was interesting enough to warrant an event like this," Opat said. "Like the rest of public-sector America…we have been hunkered down and focused on the basics." During his speech, Opat touched on changes to several areas of the County, that were also highlighted in a county press release: Budget/Finances "The State of Hennepin County is one of flat budgets and …

Apparently there is an "evil" clown that is hired to scare a child in the days leading up to his or her birthday. What?
A couple weeks ago, our Parents Talk discussion was on creepy kids toys. Many agreed that a clown, anything having to do with a clown or anything resembling a clown was straight up creepy. Well, an actor in the Swiss city of Lucerne has set himself up as the "evil" birthday clown. According to the Huffington Post and the Austrian Times, for a fee, parents can hire this psychotic clown—played by actor Dominic Deville—to leave menacing, booby-trapped letters for their children. He will also tease through text messages and phone calls. Deville warns the children they are being watched and that they will soon be the victim of an attack. At the end of the terror-filled week, the birthday boy or girl catches a cake in the face. According to the …

This does seem a bit cruel and unusual. However, I might be inclined to hire someone to mess with my 18+ child (I don't have one...this is hypothetical). That actually could be kind of funny..."Punking" your college freshman son/daughter could be cool. For instance, maybe you could hire an impostor dorm roommate, who would be the biggest jerk of all time. Then, a few days in, you could reveal the…   more ›
