City of Wayzata Seeks Volunteers for Pair of October Initiatives

Flower beds and compost site need volunteers next month.

The City of Wayzata is asking residents to pitch in a few hours of their time and some community spirit during the month of October.

More than 80 volunteers joined forces back in May to help plant gardens along Lake Street and other areas around the city. Like all gardens do at this time of year, the city’s flowerbeds now need some fall maintenance

“It’s the end of the growing season, and we need some help getting those annuals out,” Councilwoman Mary Bader said. “We had a great time in May, and we’ll have a great time in October.”

About 50 people are needed to pitch in two or three hours on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 22 (National Make a Difference Day) to get the gardens ready for winter, and Mayor Ken Willcox invited Wayzata High School’s football team to again be among them.

The football players helped clear brush and debris from an overgrown city plot earlier this summer, and Mayor Willcox last week again voiced appreciation for the effort and encouraged the team to join the October volunteer undertaking.

“Maybe they’ll be flush with a victory from a Friday night and want to help again—or maybe they’ll be too bruised,” Mayor Willcox joked last week.

A second call for volunteers is being sounded to assist the Wayzata Public Works Department at the city’s compost site during weekends in October. The compost site is open to the public during the fall for the depositing of leaves, grass and other yard refuse.

“The problem our public works people are having is people dropping off the wrong things over there and causing extra work for public works,” Bader said. “We need a few people who would be willing to be at that site for a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday in October to instruct people on what can and can’t be left.”

Residents interested in joining the October volunteer efforts are asked to contact Lynn McCarthy at lmccarthy@northstarcounselors.com.
