Blue Water Theatre Company of Wayzata will be presenting the musical comedy "Once Upon a Mattress" at Wayzata Central Middle School at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 25, Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27.
Tickets are $14 for adults and $11 for students and seniors. They are available in advance online at www.bluewatertheatre.com, or at the door beginning one hour before each performance.
Directed by Charlie Leonard with choreography by Barb Brauch and musical direction by Chris Larson, the cast of Once Upon a Mattress is comprised of over 40 teenage actors from around the Twin Cities metro area.
"Once Upon a Mattress" is a retelling of the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea." It made its Broadway premiere in 1959, and starred a young Carol Burnett in the lead role of Princess Winnifred. This was Ms. Burnett's first "big" break in the entertainment industry, and she earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actress for her efforts.
The show itself received a nomination for Best Musical and has been revived once on Broadway (in 1996 with Sarah Jessica Parker in the lead role), and has also been the subject of three separate made-for-TV adaptations.
Blue Water Theatre Company, founded in 2007, is one of the Twin Cities fastest-growing youth theatre organizations. Recent productions include Fiddler on the Roof, The Secret Garden, Annie, Company, Guys and Dolls, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Les Miserables and The Wizard of Oz.
Wayzata Central Middle School is located at 305 Vicksburg Lane in Plymouth.
