Elevated Bacteria Levels Close Wayzata Beach

Closure is Lake Minnetonka's second in as many weeks and the fourth this summer.

Wayzata Beach was closed late Tuesday afternoon at the recommendation of Hennepin County due to elevated bacteria levels.

It is the second Lake Minneotonka beach in as many weeks forced to closed because of bacteria in the water.

Excelsior Beach was closed by the Department of Health last week after elevated levels of E coli were detected. Beaches in both Tonka Bay and Mound were also closed earlier this summer because of E coli.

In addition, at least three individuals became ill with E coli after swimming in the water near Big Island during the Fourth of July holiday.

Wayzata Beach was also closed in 2012 due to high E coli levels.

Patch will have additional updates to this story as they become available.
