Westonka Wrestlers Win Pair of Duals, Place 2nd at Minnetonka Tourney

Thursday and Friday will find Westonka taking on regional rivals. Full match information below.

The Westonka/Holy Family wrestling squad won two non-conference duals on Thursday, Jan. 12—raising their record to 11-3. In the first match of the evening, the White Hawks downed host St. Paul Humboldt by the score of 66-9, then topped St. Paul Como Park 47-24.  

“It was a good night to get everyone involved and win a couple of duals,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger.  

Sam Bennyhoff, Noah Sweet, Drake Heath, Ryder Schmidt, Bryan Tierney, Tyler Ihli and Travis Peterson all won twice.

The White Hawks traveled to Minnetonka on Friday, Jan. 13, for the Second Annual Minnetonka Invitational. Westonka fared well, placing all 11 wrestlers in the top four and taking runner-up honors to state-rated Henry Sibley.  

“I thought we wrestled well, but just couldn’t quite win it without a full line-up,” assistant coach Eric Rodelius said.

Travis Peterson and Adrian Wear finished fourth in their weight classes. Drake Heath placed 3rd while Ryan Reid, Ben Rogers and Tyler Ihli all took 2nd place.

Sam Bennyhoff, Tyler Hebig, Ryder Schmidt, Bryan Tierney and Will Van Sant won their weight classes and took home championship honors.

Westonka's JV squad competed in the Becker Tourney on Friday as well, and junior Sam Lungstrom took home championship honors. 

“Sam is a varsity-caliber wrestler, and totally dominated his opponents,” commented freshmen coach John Wardlow.

The White Hawks have a big week of duals, hitting the road to wrestle section opponent Buffalo on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 7:30 p.m. and hosting Waconia, Dassel Cokato and Orono in Wright County Conference action on Friday, Jan. 20. Action starts at 5 p.m. and includes a 3-6th grade dual vs. Orono at 6:30.
