Westonka Wrestlers Finish 4th at Leopold Haglund Tourney

Postseason begins this weekend, and Westonka has earned a first-round bye.

Westonka's varsity restling squad ended the regular season by hosting two duals and the annual Leopold/Haglund Memorial tourney.  

On Thursday, Feb. 9, the White Hawks concluded the conference season with a 57-18 loss to conference champion Hutchinson, then beat a depleted Minneapolis Edison squad 65-9.  

“Hutchinson is awfully tough and blew everyone away this season,” said head coach Todd Munsterteiger. "They were definitely the best team we’ve faced this season"

Westonka ended the conference season with a 4-4 mark and an 18-7 overall record.  

On Friday, Feb. 10, the White Hawks hosted the eight-team Leopold Haglund tourney and earned a 4thplace finish.

“We’re a little beat up right now, so we didn’t finish quite as high as we would have liked,” assistant coach Eric Rodelius said.  

Placing for Westonka were: Erik Hannigan, 6th; Sam Lungstrom, 5th; Cole Peterson, Adrian Wear, Ben Rogers and Ryder Schmidt 4th; John Byers, 3rd; and champions Sam Bennyhoff, Tyler Hebig, and Bryan Tierney.  

On Saturday, Feb. 11, the junior varsity squad competed at the Dassel Cokato JV Jam. Eighth graders Kwin Retterath and Drake Heath both earned champion honors while sophomore Cole Peterson and eighth grader Noah Byers both won two matches to place second and fifth, respectively.  

“This was a great end to their JV season, and now we’ll look for these guys to contribute on varsity in the section tournaments,” freshmen coach John Wardlow said.

Westonka will host the 6AAA Team Section tournament this Saturday, Feb. 18, with preliminaries starting at 9 a.m. The White Hawks will receive a firstp-round bye and wrestle in the quarterfinal round at 10:15 a.m.  

Semi-finals are slated for noon, and the section championship will begin at 2:15 p.m.  

On Sunday, Feb. 19, the White Hawks will hold the annual MWO Youth Tourney for PreK to sixth grade wrestlers. Weigh ins are from 11:00-noon, with action starting at 12:30.
