Wayzata Trio Prepares For Final Football Game Together

Trojans graduates Hamlin, Roth and Boegel set to compete at Saturday's All-Star Football Game at TCF Bank Stadium

With one more game to go before heading their separate ways, Wayzata defensive back Sean Hamlin understood the importance of this week’s All-Star events Wednesday as he stood on the TCF Bank Stadium Field.

Saturday’s 38th Annual All-Star Football Game will be the last time that he, David Boegel and Aaron Roth will play on the same time.

“I’ve grown up with these guys since fourth grade, and we’ve been great buddies ever since,” Hamlin said. “It’s the last game I’m going to play with them, so I’m going to remember it forever.”

The trio of Trojans will take the field at 7 p.m. Saturday at the University of Minnesota as part of the North All-Star team competing against the South.

After a week worth of training camp preparations—the majority taking place in St. Peter—each player has had the chance to meet new people before heading off to college. But they’ve also enjoyed taking in the festivities with one another.

“We can crack some inside jokes without people knowing about it,” Roth said.

Roth and Boegel plan to play for the University of Minnesota Duluth next season. Roth, projected to be a wide receiver and kick returner, and Boegel, a defensive back, will take the next step into college together.

Hamline plans to play for the University of St. Thomas in the fall.

This week’s camp helped each one of the Wayzata alums understand the level of competition at the next level.

“The scout teams are better than what we practiced against during the regular season,” Hamlin said. “All these guys are definitely athletes.”

Boegel said the tempo of the game increased, which acts as a stepping stone between the high school and college levels.

Most importantly, the realization that the hardest working player will likely get the starting position has set in.

“We just need to make sure we’re pushing each other in practice,” Roth said. “We’re out here with all college athletes. It’s a little different than high school football. Everybody out here wants to play and everyone is good enough to play. If you’re not going 100 percent every time, you might not get a spot.”

Still, the All-Star week is meant to be fun. Wayzata’s trio certainly enjoyed the atmosphere and the chance to take it all in together.

The final thrill comes Saturday.

“Just running out there with these guys at 7 o’clock,” Boegel said. “Hopefully it’s going to be like another high school atmosphere when we get to the game.”
