Wayzata Shows They Are No. 1 for a Reason in Rout of Moorhead

In anticipated fashion, The Trojans roll over the Spuds, 49-14. Their dominant performance proves they are still the favorite to repeat as state champions in class 5A.

If you’re the wagering type, you loved it. It was a sure thing. Easy money.

If the real Trojans showed up, they were sure to rout the Moorhead Spuds, a team that ended the regular season with a 3-5 record. Well, the Trojans showed up alright—and in a big way.

During the game, they found numerous ways to score points and make a statement during the first round of state tournament play.

A small—and sometimes undersized—Trojan defense not only played in their normal dominant fashion, they also found ways to help the offense in putting points on the board. Two interceptions—one by Chris Pierson and one by Alex Carlson—were taken to the house for touchdowns, helping Wayzata put up points quickly in the first half.

The Wayzata offense also continued their balanced attack, scoring through the air and on the ground.

Game Recap

The scoring started quickly for the Trojans. Quarterback Nick Martin threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter to wide receivers Ethan Zeidler and Jeff Borchardt.

During the second quarter it was the defense’s opportunity to put some points on the board when Chris Pierson returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown, and Alex Carlson also returned a pick 80 yards for six points. Wayzata led, 28-0, at halftime.

At the beginning of the third quarter, Wayzata running back Antonio Ford carried the ball 90 yards for another Trojan touchdown to make the lead 35-0.

But the Spuds showed some gusto when they took the ball down the field, with running back Chase Morlock getting in the end zone from two yards out.

Then, after Wayzata’s Martin threw two more touchdown passes, the Spuds scored again off of a 35-yard run by Jacob Uglem.

Patch.com Player of the Game: Antonio Ford, Wayzata Running Back

Ford has had to carry a heavier load since fellow running back Erik Roti hurt his ankle against Champlin Park, but that’s fine with him. He showed how dangerous he is in the running game on Saturday night, carrying the ball 18 times for 249 yards. He scored on a 90-yard play and also had a break away for 70 yards before being dragged down at the 5-yard line. Defenses better come ready to play when defending Ford. A tough runner with big play ability can make any opponent pay.

What the Trojans Did Well

They executed their balanced attack and scored in many different ways. The defense also got involved in putting up points, which is a good sign for the Trojans as they go into the state semifinals against Cretin-Derham Hall. They will need to tap into their ability to diversify going forward. The remaining teams aren’t going to let the Trojans do everything well.

What the Trojans Need to Improve

The Trojans have been dominant this season against many of the state’s best teams. If they play with the same kind of urgency they normally play with, they can beat anyone in their path. The only thing that can stop Wayzata is Wayzata.
